Phillies Looking For Sliortslop
Before Feeling Team Is Complete
By CHARLES MOItEY
(Al' Sports Writer)
lEilitors Note: This is another
ill a series of stories on the Big
LiatfUe Clubs.)
V lii({ league shortstop needs
a rrood_throwing ami. but a knuek-
lehall is something he iKMHifi like
thc^ proverbial hole in the head.
Kor thut teason, Ex-Bijf League
Miiirtstop (jrttnnv Hum inner is a
kiiurklebullt-r looking for n job as
a pitcher. And his long-time- em-
ployers, the Philadelphia f'hillie.-i,
a!. looking for a shortstop.
Looking far and wide, in faet,
rienp ;rately.
Iluoiner was forced to try his
hand at pitching because of an in-
jury to his left, or non pitching
shoulder, which prevented him froii!
playing the infield. There was a
time, not too long apro, when Cran-
ny was All Star material at short-
Mop. Now, he in just another Rook-
ie pitcher, trying to make the Knur-
kieb.il 1 dance to his tune.
Who will open the season at
shortstop for the I'hils? Well,
there's Roy Smalley ami Bobby
.Morgan, a couple of trail-worn vet-
erans, rookie- John- Kennedy and
practical^- anybody the Phils can
K--i in a trade.
A fair bet in the future book
triiuht lie practically anybody.
_Th«- I'hils finished fifth in the
National League r.ici- last year.

And would be a certain bet to wind
up in second division ugain if it
weren't for their solid pitching.
The liuakers are strong on the
mound, They have the ever-smooth
ami ever-dependable Robin Roberts.
They have a husky southpaw in
Curt Simmons and u slim craftsman
in Harvey Haddix. They have tall
Jim Hearn, picked up from the
Ciants, and Jack Sanford, who
worked briefly in 1956 after his
discharge from service. They have
rubber armed Juck Meyer And re-
liable Bob Miller to take care of
the Bull 1'en duties.
When Stan Lopata is b#ck of
the plate, the Phillies get a high
grade in catching. Stan is a surdy
hand back of the hitter and swings
a strong bat himself. There always
is the chance, however, that he may
lie moved to first base, where he
has played some in the past.
The Phils wouldn't mind switch-
ing Lopata, but they don't have a
ready replacement for him back of
the dish. The only ones available
are Joe Lonnett, who hasn't learn-
ed to hit. Bonus player Mack Burk
and Andy Seminick, who is listed
is a coach.
First base is up for grabbing
between Ed Bouehee, the rookie
with the big appetite put the med-
ium batting average, and Marv
Blaylock, who is a good reserve,
but not <iuite first-string. .
The tough-timbered Solly llemus
cm! the pererinnial hopeful, Ted
Kazanski, are the favored ones for
second base.
Shortstop we covered before.
Willie Jones will be the third
baseman. Willie is a handy man
in the field and swings for the
wall at the plate. He is the type,
who isn't bullied by the tough'
pitchers and can be counted on to.
knock in bis share of runs.
The Phils are well, fixed in two,
of the three outfield positions.
Richie Ashbum is a far ranging
center fielder and Rip Repulski is
a strong armed left fielder.
Aghburn ia'oneof the best lead-
off men In baseball, possibly the
very best, ife can be counted on
for a ,300-plus average and runs
like a dew>y home en the bases,
Repulski came to the Phils in
the winter deal with the Cardinals
and will be judged on how he stacks
up with Del Ennis, who travelled in
the other direction.
Repulski is a goad fielder with
a fine arm. He hits with authori-
ty. Not quite- a threat for the lea-
gue batting title, but a srood* guy-
to have on yoar side.
And that leaves right field, the
last of the big trouble spots for the
Phillies. \
The contenders are rookies Boh
Bowman and' CK?n Gorbous, veter-
ans Elmer Valo and Prank Baum-
holtx. Manager Muyn Smith is
hoping for nothing? more than a
fair day-to-day job. in right field.
Adding it all up on the Phillies,
it comes to this. They have the
pitching to make It tough for any
team in the league on any given
day or in any giverr series. But
the deep strength does not seem
to be tnere to make a real run
for all the money.

AUSTIN (*t-r-A dazzling array
of track and field stars from
across the nation pose a major
threat to the recon) books of the
Texas Relays when they get under
way tomorrow.
The list of - high jumpers and
pole vaultars assembled is especial-
ly impressive, and the chanee for
new records in these events is high.
Some 1,253 athletes have so far
indicated they will enter the meet
at the Memorial Stadium on the
University of Texas campus. This
is only six less than last year's
record-smashing total, and offi-
cials say it is still possible to enter.
The meet opens tomorrow morn-
ing at with preliminaries.
When the lights go on, IK champ-
ionship events Will be held. The re-
maining 21 contests are scheduled
for Saturday afternoon. -
The meet will have such stars
as Bobby Morrow of Abilene
Christian College, Eddie Southern,
Bobby Whilden and Joe Villareal of
Texas, J. W. Mashburn of Okla-
homa
una State, Don Stewart of S.
F. and Kent Floerke of Kansas.
A hot duel should take place be*
tween Texas and Abilene Christian
tn the 440 and 880 yard relays.
Kansas is favored in the distance
medley and 4-mile relays, with
Texas, Illinois, Houston, Arkansas
and Oklahoma A&M challenging.
Kansas also is chosen to take
the two-mile relay and is the choice
in the sprint medley.
Teams expected to dominate the
college, class are East Texas State,
Kansas State of Emporia, Kansas
State of Pittsburgh, Lamar Tech
and Howard Payne.
In the junior college-freshman
class, Texas Tech and Arkansas
appear to bo chief challengors to a
good Texas team.
The Baytown Ganders are stand-
outs in the high school class. Their
chief rivals will probably be Dal-
las Sunset, Pasadena, San Angela,
Austin Travis, Houston Lamar and
Corpus Christ.i Ray.
