The detection of two national
security agt n< y employes to the
Soviet I'mon may be described as
another episode in a very contus-
ing sequence of events. It is part
ol a long sickness which may leave
humanity in a much weakened
stale.
The young defectors, Martin and
Mitchell, ar^ traitors all right.
There is no other term that will ap-
ply to what they did, that is, if they
left of their own free will and are
not making statements under dur-
ess.
Many people "ill say that the
two men just couldn't take it. They
were weaklings They did not rea-
lize that the United States, the free
nations, have been fighting a war
of survival There are painful ne-
cessities under these conditions. VVe
are not responsible for these neces-
sities the communists are. Would
these young men have a country
suffer a gas attack without retalia-
ting?'.' Dc they think they are the
only ones who have scruples??
Don't they know that our officials
have to make agonizing decisions
all the time lor no other reason but
to keep this country safe?
And all in defense. The people at
the top are of unquestionable moral
background. They have been
taught to play the rules of the
game. It is not their fault that the
game has become dirtied by the
other fellow to a sickening point, i
The Russians have not hesitated
to corrupt, to subvert, to torture,
in order to achieve their own ends.
We have been far more decent in
our counter-moves, perhaps too de-
cent.
The charge that United States of.'
ficials have taken unwarranted
risks would have some validity if
the two young men had stayed
home and argued about it, but that I
would have taken the kind of
courage they haven't got.
No one is perfect in this world, i
No one is infallible. Many deci-
sions of the past have been re-
gretted by those who made them.
