CALIFORNIA OIL
G-USHEBS ACTIVE
San Francisco Cal. May 28. The
famous Lake View gusher located m
the Midway oil district has in the 63
days of its existence poured forth 2-
500000 barrels of crude oil which has
a market value of about $1500000. In
the same district in Santa Barbara
county in southern California are the
HartnelL Squires and Palmer Xo. 1
gushers. Palmer gusher No. 2 a short
distance away began suddenly by
spouting oil at the rate of 5000 barrels
per day on May IS. and this flow in-
creased within three days to 8000 bar-
rels the oil pushing from a depth of
3100 feet with every prospect of a con-
siderable increase as the well cleared
itself of heavy sand.
KEW SMELTER AND
CONVERTOR AT TERRAZAS
The Bio Tinto Copper company is
erecting a new copper smelting and
converter plant at Terrazas a station
25 miles north of Chihuahua on the
National Railways of Mexico. R. B.
Hutchinson general manager it is said
expects the plant to be completed and
ready to blow in the middle of next
July. The smelter will consist of two
200-ton water jacket furnaces. K. I.
Schneider of El Paso is superintendent
of the mine.
NEW MEXICO MINER WILL
INSPECT CHIHUAHUA MINES
T. H. Jenks a mining engineer of Al-
buquerque N. M. is at the Zeiger on
his way to the Ocampo district of west-
ern Chihuahua to inspect gold mines
properties after which he will return
to manage the mines at "White Pine
camp Gunnison county Colorado for
2he United States Mining and Holding
company of Boston Mass.
The Colorado mines were formerly

o-nued by the late Charles L. Tutt of
Colorado Springs and were purchased
oa the recommendation of Mr. Jenks.
Tliev cover an area of 55 acres of pat-
ented mining ground developed by over
2200 feet of tunnels The ore carries
lead copper gold and silver and will
average $40 a ton in value. The prop-
erties are only 12 miles over a good
road from the nearest failway station.
Mr. Jenks's father professor William
Jenks of Albuquerque is now operat-
ing the Sun group of gold mines at
Cochiti N. M. and developing large
bodies of milling ore. He is also in-
terested in the Ventura group of silver-
lead mines southwest of El Paso in the
Galeana district state of Chihuahua.
Simple Tests for Provng the
Metal Discovered in Mt.
Franklin.
The discovery of tin in Mount Frank-
i lin suggests the idea that the metal
may exist in granites not only in other
portions of this mountain but in the
granites of the Organs and San An-
dres In New Mexico the latter being
continuations of the same great uplift.
A prospector in the latter range re
ports having found casslterite in seams

Uouid Test for Tin.
F. L. Hess of the United States geo-
' logical survey gives the following teBt
which for its simplicity deserves to be
' widely known:
i A piece of the suspected mineral is
tra.ted with zinc and dilute hydro-
chloric or sulphuric acid preferably the
former -nhen if tin oxide a coating of
I metalic tin soon appears on the frag
ment some of the hydrogen gas given
off by the action of the acid on the
Vine linltec- -trith tho nvvrrpn nf the tin
ore to form water leaving metalic tin
' On the siirfnyB nf th sner!men. The
mineral and the zinc should be in close
contact consequently granulated zinc
is recommended though zinc shavings
also work well. No heat is required.
After putting some zinc under and
around the fragment a little water may
be added and ithen enough hydro-chloric
acid to cause a vigorous action. In a
few minutes the liquid can be poured
off and the mineral washed in water
when if cassiterlte or tin oxide is pres-
ent a grayish metalic coating will be
seen which by rubbing on the hand or
with a soft cloth soon becomes fright.
Care must be taken to have an excess
of zinc present' or to pour off the
liouid before all the zinc is dissolved
otherwise the acid if in excess after
I the zinc Is all in solution will in
course of time dissolve the coating of
tin.
Supposed tin minerals are often test-
ed on charcoal -with a blow pipe but
the chemical action is simpler. Tin ore
alone is infusible before the blow pipe
and is proof against all acids hydrogen
being the active agent in tha test just
described.
The Roasting Test.
Professor Arthur Lakes says that tin
may also be detected by grinding mix- I
ing with sodium carbomte and roast-
ins: on charcoal. Small Globules of
j white metal are given off which are
maleable under the hammer and are i
harder than silver which they resem-
ble. In nitric acid they are oxidized i
to an insoluable white powder. j
How Tin Ore Looks.
Tin when found in veins is gener- j
ally in fair sized crystals like gar-
nets or in grains disseminated through
the rock. It may also occur massive
or in concretions with rounded botry-
oidal (or like a cluster of grapes) or
reniform (kidney shape) surfaces of a '
J filerous structure called "wood tin."
Crystals of tin occur as square prisms
and pyramids often In twins.
1EAD ORE BODY FOUND

Ben X. "Williams with a force of six
miners has opened in his property in
the Dragoon mountains Cochise county-
A drift from the 75 foot level 14 feet
long is all shipping ore needing no
sorting. Assays run as high as SO per-
cent lead and over 400 ounces silver.
Two carloads have been shipped and
three more carloads are on the dump
ready for shipment to smelter. The
shaft is two and a half miles north of
Dragoon station on the Southern Pa-
cific. J. P. Richardson is preparing to be
gin shipments from the Centunan mine
in the same camp and will ship three
cars a week to the smelter.
