Hot Pursuit
Two Irishmen came over from the
old country. They stopped at a ho-
tel for the night and found the bed-
bugs were so thick that they could
not sleep. So they went out on the
porch to sleep.
After a few minutes Mike punched
Pat and pointed to some lightning
bugs as he said: “It’s no use, Pat,
they’re coming after us with their
lanterns now.”
TOKYO.—Tons of powdered milk
donated by the United States for free
school lunches have been traced to
private dealers who disposed of it at
huge profits, Japanese police said
Thursday.
Officials said the milk, donated
from American surpluses, had been
traced to illegal channels in 11 pre-
fectures. Scores of school officials
may be indicted as a result of in-
vestigations.

munist Party,” Nixon declared,
all my public speeches and private
talks I have always said that x the
loyalty of Truman, Adlai E. Steven-
son and all the leaders of the Dem-
ocratic Party should not be ques-
tioned—only their judgment. The
Alger Hiss case speaks for itself. Mr.
Truman called it a red herring.”
Truman several times recently has
accused Nixon of calling him a trai-
tor during 1952 campaign talks “all
over the West.” The former Pres-
ident said the alleged remarks made
him fighting mad.

"DIG THAT URANIUM"
The Bowery Boys in Their Latest Comedy
NEW YORK. — The next
somebody tells you he’s leading
dog’s life—congratulate him!
For as the Westminster Kennel
Club show opened at Madison Square
Garden today, these facts were made
public as result of an exhaustive
survey:
1. Dogs, on the average, eat better
than people.
2. Table scrapping your hound is
horrible.
3. Show pups receive the same
vitamins you do — and some you
don’t.
4. Most dogs are pampered and
overfed.
5. More poodles sit on more laps
than people.
So, if by some chance you are a
German shepherd, or maybe even a
naturalized boxer, you still have a
chance. Certainly the way the
sirens of the screen are taking to the
poodles you could do worse working
for a living.
You think you’re doing pretty
good, probably, when you grab a cup
of black java for breakfast, a ham
on rye for lunch and find a can-
opener gracing a can of beans—and
a note from mama—when you arrive
at your well-mortgaged chateau
come nightfall. Better you should
live in a kennel.

CHICAGO. — James McDonough,
32, found his apartment, six weeks
after he rented it.
McDonough came to Chicago from
Dayton, Ohio, and rented an apart-
ment on Jan. 3. He paid a week’s
rent in advance and then went out
to buy groceries.
He couldn’t find his way back.
‘ During the next six weeks, Mc-
Donough searched the area where he
thought his apartment was located.
He bought a newspaper advertise-
ment and even had himself listed as
a missing person.
His landlady spotted McDonough’s
ad and telephoned him yesterday at
a new apartment he had rented. She
said she had kept his belongings safe,
but had rented his apartment to
someone else.
She added that McDonough’s old
apartment is only five blocks away
from his new one.
DALLAS.—Revenue officers rare-
ly take the trouble to raise an eye-
brow over taxpayers’ letters at this
time of year. They’re, too busy
checking tax returns.
But the following letter received
in the office of Tax Director Ellis
Campbell Jr., really set eyes to bulg-
ing:
“I am enclosing a check for $25
as my sincere contribution and as an
expression of my deep gratitude be-
fore God to this big, great, free and
blessed country.
“I know that I am free of income
tax, because my income is so small.
“I have been living in Texas for
several years as an immigrant priest
and I know the price of liberty, hav-
ing been in two concentration camps
under the Nazis.
“I was liberated from a German
concentration camp by American
troops.
“I know what suffering my coun-
trymen and the people of all nations
behind the Iron Curtain are under-
going.
“I appreciate the opportunity of
living here and I feel the necessity
to express my real gratitude and ap-
preciation.
“My widow’s mite to the U. S.
treasury is so small that I am em-
barrassed that I cannot give more in
my appreciation to this government,
country and free nation where refu-
gees of all nations, tongues and be-
liefs can find freedom, liberty, hon-
est life and good care.”
The Internal Revenue Service here
would not reveal^ the letter writer’s
identity. The check was put into
regular Treasury Department
counts and labeled: “Gift to
United States.”
Truman Traitor Tag
Disowned by Nixon
NEW YORK. — Vice President
Richard M. Nixon said Monday night
he never called Harry S. Truman a
traitor, as the former Democratic
President complained.
“I did not call Mr. Truman a trai-
tor, absolutely not,” Nixon told re-
porters.
Nor, he added, did he call the
Democratic Party the “party of trea-
son” or question the loyalty of any
of its leaders.
“I have always said that there is
only one party for treason in the
United States and that is the Com-
