IOWA CITY, Iowa.—Thomas Pyle

breaking and entering.
A dye had been put on an envelope

to get their names before the public.
All the city officials are in office to
get a share of the graft.
6. Knock the town, knock its in-
dustries, knock the schools and
churches, keep repeating the town is
going to the dogs, things are better
other places; to invest in such a dead
place would be the height of foolish-
ness—and keep on knocking like a
drunken woodpecker.
There you have it—six simple di-
rections for producing ghost towns.
It’s hard for one person, working
alone, to get results; but if you keep
at it, eventually you’ll get some con-
verts, and a Ghost Town.

This Newspaper’s large number of readers make a
Want Ad the most economical means of finding a
buyer for your unneeded possessions: Livestock,
field seed, farm implements, household goods, pet
animals, poultry, real estate, musical instruments,
jewelry, automobiles and bicycles, or to find a renter
if you have a house, apartment or farm to rent.
,You’ll find a Want Ad also effective in locating
strayed livestock, and in finding something you want
to buy.

A recent report from the Colorado
Springs, Colorado, Chamber of Com-
merce, tells of how to make a Ghost
Town. It is an interesting tongue-
in-cheek article that will hold just as
true for our own community as for
Colorado Springs.
It went as follows:
Results are certain for those work-
ing to create more “Ghost Towns” if
these simple directions are followed
either by accident or design. Hun-
dreds of former thriving communi-
ties which are now silent ghost towns
prove there is more truth than poe-
try to the simple statement “It could
happen here.”
Here are the methods proved by
experience to guarantee bankruptcy,
insanity, disappointment, suicides—
all by-products of ghost towns.
1. Tell everyone you meet that you
never buy anything at home; the
merchants are a bunch of crooks,
robbers and cheats.
2. Belittle all efforts for commu-
nity betterment—the people trying to
do these things are secretly making a
lot of mohey, want to “run things”
and their way of doing things is all
wrong anyway.
3. Never waste money by advertis-
ing or waste time trying to attract
trade to the town—nobody reads the
ads, there is never anything in the
paper, it’s always late, and why
should anyone want to come to town
—it’s a dead place.
4. Turn down all appeals for con-
tributions; and do it in a nasty way
so you won’t be bothered again, be-
cause the money collected is even-
tually stolen by some “higher-ups”
anyway.
5. Refuse to serve on all commit-
tees, have nothing to do with civic
organizations—the Chamber of Com-
