the United States post office should
be run as a public service, not on a
pay-as-you-go basis. He saw no rea-
son why this department should
make a profit when all others in the
government incur deficits that run
into the billions each year.
Neuberger is a member of the

making the post office self-support-

Save Cash Register Tape
We have discontinued green stamps, replacing them
with Register Tapes which you will save just as you
have been saving stamps. We furnish envelopes for
you to keep Register Tapes in until you are ready to
1 redeem them. You can do this in THREE ways: You
can get cash for your tapes on the basis of 1%; or
you can buy groceries with them on the basis of 2%;
or you can redeem them for valuable premiums just
like you did your stamps. You will find this plan to
be much more attractive than the stamp plan.

Col. Homer Garrison Jr., director
of the Texas Department of Public
Safety, announced today that appli-
cations will be accepted until mid-
January from young men interested
in becoming state policemen.
Approximately 150 men between
21 and 35 years of age will be se-
lected for training as patrolmen in
examinations to be given Jan. 13, 14
and 15 in various cities throughout
Texas. Those qualifying will begin
their training April 1.
Garrison said the deadline for fil-
ing application is Jan. 10 and that
classroom instructions will extend
for more than 20 weeks, followed by
on-the-job training in the field. All
student patrolmen receive $300 per
month during the first phase of the
training period; their salaries are
automatically increased during field
training.
Young men interested in the posi-
tions must have been a resident of
Texas one year prior to making ap-
plication, have a high school educa-
tion, be between 68 and 76 inches in
height and weigh not less than two
pounds or more than three pounds
per inch of height. They also must
be in good physical condition and of
good moral character.
The patrolman positions to be
be filled are in four functions of the
Texas DPS — Highway Patrol, Li-
cense and Motor Vehicle Inspection.
Under the new organization plan re-
cently installed by the department,
all patrolmen will receive the same
basic training to allow them greater
promotional opportunities.
Garrison said the list of cities
where examinations will be given
will be announced at a later date.
Complete information may be ob-
tained by writing to the Texas De-
partment of Public Safety at Austin.
