Betas Elect Officers
The Beta Club of Tom Bean School
held their first meeting on Sept. 15 with
13 new members, making a total of 31
members.

Tom Bean’s School Board set up an
Adult Education Course at their Monday
night meeting, with the provision that 15
persons enroll. The purpose of the course
will be to acquire high school equivalency
status. Adults completing the 120-hour
course will take a General Educational
Development test to acquire the high
school graduate equivalent rating. Tim
Kelly, superintendant of Tom Bean
School or Principal Jim Jackson, may be
contacted for details. The course will be
conducted at night.

Tom Bean High School held its annual
student council officers election for
1971-72. After a week of campaigning,
the following officers were elected:
Ronny Bourland, senior president; Charla
Elkins senior vice-president; Randy
Morphew, Junior, secretary-treasurer; and
Wendell Chumbley, senior, reporter.
FHA Initiates Girls
The freshmen girls in the FHA were
initiated into the chapter this week. On
Wednesday, the girls dressed as TV
characters and on Thursday, they will
dress as song titles and on Friday as TV
cartoons. A sportsmanship award will be
presented to a girl on Friday.

students. The parents were protesting the
school board’s long hair policy, which, as
Superintendent Kelly described it, was
‘‘Above the eyes, above the collar, above
the ears and with sideburns not below the
ear.”

Graveside services were held for Sam
Short, age 66, at 3:30 p.m. at Vittitoe
Cemetery. Services were conducted by
Rev. Houston Garner.
He passed away at 5:30 p.m. Monday
at Parkland Hospital in Dallas where he
was a resident.
Mr. Short was born September 28,
1905 in Whitewright, the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Short. He was a
custodian in the Dallas schools.
He is survived by one brother, Charlie
of Trenton; five sisters, Mrs. Cassie
Mullins, Pottsboro; Mrs. Viola
Southerland, Denison; Mrs. Ruth
Blankenship, Washington, D.C.; Mrs.
Juanita Watson, Bakersfield, California;
and Mrs. James Davis of Dallas.

Hyepock, age 75, who passed away at
11:00 a.m. Monday at his home, Route 2,

Wednesday in the Earnheart Chapel by
Rev. Dale Gore, Baptist minister of
Trinity Baptist Church, Sherman. Burial
was in Pilot Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Hyepock was born April 29,1896,
in Leonard, the son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. James M. Hyepock. He married
Hattie Lee Owens on April 17, 1923 at
Gilmer. He was a concrete contractor.
