PASSOVER MESSAGE
FROM THE RABBI
By
Dr. Hyman Judah Schachtel
Our ancient forebears in Egypt, who
broke away from that bondage, gave an
example of the love of freedom which
never failed to inspire the generations
which came after them. The Passover
Exodus not only remained as an ideal
to be maintained by the followers of
Judaism, but it was in large measure
at the heart of the founding of the free
way of life and the democracies of the
Western World. Wherever people read
the Bible, wherever they learned the
story of the Exodus, there they became
enamored of freedom, and knew from
what the Bible taught them that they
were born to be free.
Let us, as we sit down to our Seder
observance this year, not permit the
eating festivities to overwhelm the pro-
found memories and the message of
Passover. Let none of us allow our chil-
dren to go through the Passover week
without emphasizing to them the glori-
ous story of our redemption from Egypt.
Let us inspire our children to be the
champions of freedom, the exponents of
liberty, the dedicated servants to the
ideal of democracy under God and in
freedom. What a pity it would be if
Passover were only a matzo festival, in-
stead of the exalting memorial to our
fathers, who with courage and with sac-
rifice, under the inspiring leadership of
Moses, broke the shackles of Pharaoh’s
slavery and moved out from bondage
to the higher ideals of Sinai. Only when
we remember this, not only during Pass-
over, but throughout our lives, can we
become imbued with a vision of the
Kingdom of God to which we dedicate
ourselves with all of our hearts, with all
of our souls, with all of our might.
