Letter from the Governor
Governor Abbott convened the first Texas Safety
Commission meeting in August with lawmakers,
educators, experts and community leaders to identify
strategies to promote community healing and combat
hate and extremism. Shown above (I-r) with Reps. Joe
Moody, Cesar Blanco, Mary Gonzalez and Art Fierro. A
larger bipartisan contingent from the Texas House and
Senate, along with leadership, also attended the four-
hour session. At the start of the 86th Legislative Session last year, we were
called upon by the people of this great state to dare greatly,
to address the challenges Texans could
not solve themselves, to make Texas
even freer, stronger, safer and smarter.
y message to my partners in the Texas
House and Senate was simple. All of
this we can do. All of this we must do.
Because we live in the greatest state in America,
and we have an obligation to make it even better.
Now in looking back over a year of historic
triumphs and heartbreaking tragedy, I am
reminded of the amazing resilience and
optimism of the people of Texas. As we have seen in years past, when touched by
acts of evil or the destructive force of nature,
Texans come together to grieve, to comfort
neighbors and then to act with calm resolve to help prevent other families
from experiencing such devastating loss.
Driven by that fervent faith in the future and blessed with the freedom to
aspire, Texans today have built an even bigger, better tomorrow. Families
are growing here, jobs are growing here and, best yet, opportunity is
growing here. That is why we remain the envy of the nation.
In the year ahead, I look forward to working by your side each and every
day to build an even broader path to prosperity for all Texas families.
As always, it is a blessing to have the fabulous First Lady of Texas with me
on this journey. With her soft strength and steady grace, Cecilia is a
powerful advocate for Texas; I am so proud of all that she is doing,
especially for the children of this state.
As we look to the horizon and see opportunity unbounded, I invite you to
look back at 2019 and all that we accomplished together. There is a
recurring theme in the pages ahead:
Texas is exceptional because of you.2020 REPORT TO THE PEOPLE 3
