Dear Editor,
On behalf of the McKin-
ney Fire Department, City
Council and the citizens of
McKinney, we want to
express our sincere appre-
ciation of the Allen Fire
Department for their very
capable assistance in ex-
tinguishing our recent con-
flagration at the cotton
warehouse. The dedication
to duty and the desire to
serve was most evident in
all of the members of your
Fire Department.
I, personally, was at the
scene of the fire and found
it very commendable that
all the departments worked
together so well and seemed
to be one unit rather than
several.
Again, thank you, and I
want you to know that I find
it most comforting that our
mutual aid program works
so well. As previously
agreed, please feel free to
call upon our Fire Depart-
ment at any time we may
assist you.

How come the Republicans catch more heck from the
press and TV than the Democrats do? I've got it figured
out. It's because Watergate is a lot easier to spell and
pronounce than Chappaquiddick.
But if that is true, how do you explain Bee Mountain on
the Brazos?
Don't ask me. I'm still wondering if I should jump off a
cliff just because Kenneth Chunn jumps off a diff.
When I was a little kid, Kenneth Chun was my buddy.
When his parents let him ride his bike on the highway, or
quit wearing his shoes in the spring,! wanted the same
privileges. So I’d tell my mother that Kenneth could do it
and my mother would always say: "1f Kenneth Chunn
jumped off Inspiration Point, would you jump too?"
The resignation of Vice
President Agnew is a tragic .
incident in the history of our
country. It is not a partisan
matter. I have compassion
for Mr. Agnew and his
family. However, it is
obvious that if he was guilty
of income tax evasion, he
could not remain as Vice
President of the United
States.
PHASE IV SHOULD END

like their predecessors, and
ought to be ended. Wage

Laity Day is that special
time set aside for church
members to lead in wor-
ship. The theme for Laity
Day is "Called Together”
emphasizing the unity and
common ministry of laity
and clergy.
The service at First
United Methodist will be
directed by James Marion,
Church Lay Leader. The
message will be given by
Wendell Seaman. Other
members will also have
parts in the service.

That was her way of saying: Two wrongs do not make a
right." / was brought up on that marvelous bit of
philosophy. It didn't matter if all the guys hitch iked to Fort
Worth to see the burlesque show, it was still the wrong
thing to do and it didn't become a right thing just because
Chunn did it, even if he was a minister's son.
Ah, memories. Whatever did happen to the idea about
two wrongs? A bumper sticker out now reads: "Nobody
Drowned at Watergate." Which is as sickly funny as the
story about John and Martha Mitchell meeting Ted
Kennedy at a party and John asks Ted to drive Martha
home.
The idea we are asked to swallow is that Watergate isn't
so bad after all because Ted Kennedy drove a gid into the
Chappaquiddick and then fled the scene like a thief in the
night. Or it's okay for the taxpayers to build beautiful homes
for Nixon because they built airports for Lyndon Johnson.

MOST RECENT proposed rate increases from the Postal
Service includes another big boost for second class mail
users. That means us.
Postal officials said the increase was necessary because
past rate boosts have "caused publications to cut their
weight and size to reduce their postage."
Sounds like the kind of race nobody can win.
Ultimate loser is the reader. A 40 per cent average boost
to The American means another slice out of the profit
pie—already quite meager. Since most of our circulation is
through the mail, costs will be well over $1 per subscriber
per year.
You all know what that means. Like everybody else, we
have to pass on a cost increase. We just feel sorry for the
guy at the end of the line.

Dear Editor,
This letter is not really a
complaint (I am beyond
that point) but is more a
matter of who done it, why,
and what is it. I am
referring to a highly notice-
able stench that seemed to
blanket Allen this morning.
If it has not yet come to
your attention, just step
outside, now take a deep
breath, if you catch a scent
that smells a lot like a
burning tractor tire stuffed
full of cheese, that is it!
