THE J-TAC
PAGE THREE
^ With their backs to the wall,
Tarleton's Texans played a
.grueling six hours of baseball
' Saturday under a hot sun and
beat Pan American College of
Edinburg 4-3 and 3-1 for the
NAIA District 8 championship.
Coach Hobart Lytal's TSC nine
seemetl out of the running -111
the best of three series after
losing Friday's opener 4-1 .and
then falling behind 3-0 going in-
to the eighth inning of Satur-
day's second game. But then
they reached down and' got a
little something — that indes-'
cribable potion that winners are
often made of — and rallied for'
■two heart stopping victories' ov-
er a fine team from the' Valley.
Tarleton will' now go to the •
double elimination'regional tour-
nament at Sherman May 19-21.
Another team from Texas and'
New Mexico, Oklahoma and Ar-
kansas representatives w i 1.1
iriake, up the regional field. '
Fisher Splendid •
Regular starters Mike Wood 1
and Kim Jaeops had. two . full
games behind them when the
two teams went into the rubber
match at 2:30 arid Lytal called
on his captain, and right fielder
Max Fisher to take the mound
after Jay Heilman had given
up a first inning run. Fisher, a
southpaw who had pitched only
five and two thirds innings all
reason, turned in eight innings
of masterful duty. He gave up
only four hits and methodically
.kept the ball over the plate, giv-
ing up a miserly four walks.
Left fielder J. D. McMahon
was the hitting star of the final
Gain
game. After center fielder Du-
ane Yeatman had singled in the
second inning, McMahon poled
a home run over the left field
fence to give the Texans a 2-1
lead — a margin that turned out
to be sufficient. ]Pan Ameri-
can's first inning run came
wh^n.^ueenie Cortez walked,
took second on a passed ball
and came home on a single by
catcher Rudy Guajardo.
9th Inning Insurance
Fisher and -Pan Am right"
haiider Gary Loi'f Ipp.ked, in a
pitching duel after McMahoh's
four-bagger,, .although Tarleton
left men stranded in tfie fourth,
fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The Texans gave Fisher some
insurance 'in their half of the
ninth when catcher Bill Kinder
singled up the middle driving
Mike Moss aqross .the. plate
from third. McMahon was hit
by a pitch to stait the inrfftig
and went to second on a field-
er's choice. Mike Moss jwas al-
3q. safe at first on the infield
' roller. McMahon was forced out
■ at home. on Bezner's smash to
deep short, but Moss scooted
to third on the throw and was
rescued by Kinder's safety.
Circus Catch Finale
The Broncs had notions about
a rally in their last at bat as
Rene Torres doubled to left af-
ter there was one out. Short-
stop Bucky Rodriguez was
thrown out for the second out
and Torres went to third. Fish-
er walked a pinch hitter, before
third baseman Lance Kitchens
ended the game in circus style.
Luis Alamia sent a high foul
down the' third base line and
Kitchens momentarily lost the
ball in the sun. He caught
the ball, it popped up out of his
glove, but he finally got it un-
der control flat on his back. Be-
fore Kitchens could get to his
feet he was mobbed by the jubi-
lant Texans and a large crowd
of fans.
Last Minute Rally
The Texans extended the play-
off to the limit with some last
minute heroics in the second
game. Pan American had taken
a 3-0 lead witty a single run in
the sixth, a solo home run by
right;,fielder Kiki Guerra in the
seventh and a single run the
eighth. Until TSC came up in
the eighth' they had touched
■Bronc prtcher Juan Guzman for
only three hits, but they sudden-
ly found the range.
After John Scott fanned and
Kitchens, walked, Yeatman slap-
ped a double to move Kitchens '
to third and ; then McMahon
again came through as he
smashed a double down the left
field line to score Yeatman and
Kitchens ■ and trinl the lead to
3-2.
Blooper Does It
Batting last,- the Texans had
to tie or win in. their ninth or
hang up their- spikes "-for 1966.
Kinder led off .with a single and
Fisher walked after Taylor
struck out. Scott hit intb a force
that moved Kinder to third and
put Fisher out at second.'With
two outs and the partisan crowd
pleading for a hit, Kitchens
stroked a single up the middle
to score Kinder and knot the
count. Yeatman then got his sec-
ond hit in as many innings as he
blooped a single over second
base and Scott came sliding
home with the winning run.
Southpaw Kim Jaeops took
the mound victory, giving up on-
ly five hits.
The Texans had been their
own worst enemy in Friday's
opener as they committed ffve
errors afield and suffered from
two passed balls and a pair of
wild pitches that cost them rims.
Their only score .came in the
first inning when Scott doubled
Tayor home following a single.
Right hander Mike Wood suf-
fered the opening loss, his first
of the season, although he gave
up only six hits.
Saturday's championship is
the first by any Tarleton ath-
letic team since the college
started four-year competition in
1961.
