Fightin' Texans named
Defensive end Terry
Gambill and tight end
Floyd Beasley were named
defensive and offensive
"Fightin' Texans" last
week following Tarleton's
31-0 win over Lubbock
Christian College.
Gambill, a 6'2", 215-
pound junior from
Garland, had a banner
defensive day: five solo
tackles, three assisted
tackles, two quarterback
sacks, one other tackle for
a loss, and a batted-down
pass at the line of scrim-
mage. In addition, he
caused one fumble and
recovered another.
Gambill was a second
team all-conference
selection last year.
Beasley, a (i'4", 230-
pound senior, had one of his
best days as a Tarleton
receiver. He caught three
passes for 67 yards and
scored the Texans' first
two touchdowns. The first
TD came on a one-yard
pass on fourth and one at
the goal line.
The second score was a
38-yard catch and run play
in which Beasley ran over
three tacklers on his way to
the end zone. Beasley was
also applauded for his
blocking during the game.
Like Gambill, Beasley
was an all-conference
selection last year and is a
team captain this year.
The "Fightin' Texan"
awards are given weekly to
the offensive and defensive
players who most show the
qualities of teamwork, self-,
sacrifice and sport-
smanship during the week.

Twenty-nine players
reported for men's basket-
ball workouts last week, in-
cluding seven returners
from last year's squad. The
team will eventually be cut
tp approximately 15
players, with the. first cut
due in about two weeks.
Four of the seven
returners were starters
last year, and the others
saw considerable action.
The post position will be
filled by returning senior
David Schumacher, 6'5".
Bryan Stewart, a 6'4"
senior, returns at forward.
These two players are ex-
pected to do most of the
Texans' rebounding.

juniors Glen Schuelke and
Ross Taylor. Taylor was
named all-conference the
past two years, and is ex-
pected to give the Texans
much of their scoring pun-

The teams to beat in the
TIAA appear to be Austin
College and Lubbock Chris-
tian. AC is picked my most
forecasters as the probable
conference champ, and
LCC is on the rise.
But the TSU players feel
good about TSU's chances.
"If we're consistent we
stand a good chance of win-
ning this year," says
Schuelke.
Stewart says, "We'll
have more depth this year,
and other teams have lost
their starters."
In their season opener
the Texans will entertain
Mary Hardin Baylor at
home Nov. 9.
which is the Sunday after
homecoming, was an:
nounced recently by the
Inaugural Steering
Committee.
Dr. Barry Thompson
officially took over the
reins of the institution
September 1, but the
transition between
Thompson and retiring
President W. O. Trogdon
has been a long, gradual
process. "Thanks to Dr.
Trogdon the transition has
been smooth," said
Thompson.
; Thompson becomes the
new Tarleton president
only days after the in-
stitution recorded its
largest enrollment ever.
"We worked hard to in-
crease the enrollment, and
I think there are several
factors responsible for the
increase." Dr. Thompson
accredited the unstable
ecomonic situation and
diligent effort of student
recruiting for the 13 per-
cent increase.
"Tarleton has as much
potential for controlled
growth as any institution. I
am excited about the new
programs we are offering
and feel we have a bright
future," Thompson said.
Details of the
inauguration are being
worked out by a committee
of Tarleton Faculty and
staff headed by chairman
Dr. .Johnny Dunn. The
committee also includes
Dr. Robert Fain, Homer
Robertson, Dr. Pat
Zelman, Dr. Joe Autry,
John Whiting, Mike Leese,
J,- Louis Evans, Dr. Ron
Bradberry and Pat Gilley.
