Dorm renovation underway
By LISA NEWBURY
Cy Norris, Vice
President for facilities
said last week that
TSU is emphasizing
the rehabilitation of
many student-support
buildings. Two of the
projects that are
underway are the
renovations of two of
the three men's dor-
mitories - Ferguson
and Bender,
Ferguson is
undergoing a three-
year program to com-
pletely renovate the in-
terior of the building.
The first and second
phases have been com-
pleted and the third
phase will begin next
summer. Norris said
that the cost was going
to be $75,000 a floor for
the Ferguson building.
The first and second
phases included the
first and second floors
and the third phase
will include the third
floor of the building.
"Ferguson will have
a complete new look"
to its 120 rooms, 40 per
floor, Norris said. The
interior of each room
is being redone com-
pletely, including
floors, walls, ceilings,
furniture, cabinets,
heating system and
lights.
Bender is the oldest
of the two dorms. It
houses 190 students
and is not air condi-
tioned. It lias
deteriorated from age
and use. "It's just seen
too many years and too
many people," Norris
said.
The cost for renova-
tion for this building
will be $1 million.
Phase one was com-
pleted last summer on
Bender, costing
Tarleton $250,000.
Bender residents are
enjoying the newly
rebuilt common baths
of which there are two
on each floor and six in
all.
The baths have com-
pletely rebuilt showers
and restrooms with
new tile, lights, plumb-
ing, air circulation,
doors and shower
equipment.
Also replaced were
the lavatories in each
room, new furniture
for the third floor (the
first arid second floors
already had new fur-
niture), and a new
green roof.
Phase two will get
underway next sum-
mer on Bender at a
cost of $300,000. this
will include the
replacement of the
electrical and
mechanical systems.
A modern, effiecent,
reliable method of
heating the building
will be used instead of
the o 1 d steam
radiators that have
nearly worn out. Also,
new lights, wires,
mains, and switches
will be installed.
Phase three will be
done the summer of
'85. Norris says this en*
tails "a general face
lift".
