we’d be looking back at last

them as the “good old days.”
Doesn’t it make you a bit
uneasy that colleges and uni-

broke?

QUESTION—What size in-
dustry would Allen need to
attract to add $50,000 in city tax
revenue each year?
ANSWER—Property with a
market value of $800,000 would
do the trick, according to Walter
Curtis, city tax assessor-col-
lector.
This property would have an
assessed valuation of $400,000
(50% of market value) and be
taxed at $1.25 per $100 valua-
tion, adding $50,000 to the city’s
tax fund annually.
The same property would pay
$90,000 in school taxes annually.
Tax rate of the Allen Inde-
pendent School District is $1.50
per $100 valuation, based on
75% of true market value.
According to a nationwide
study, a business or industry
with 25 jobs would add the
following to a community:
* $177,500 more in personal
income per year.
* $3,350 revenue from resi-
dential power sales.
* One new commercial power
load.
* $67,250 more local bank
deposits.
* 1 more local retail establish-
ment.
* 17 more indirect jobs.
* 24 more automobile regis- -
trations.
* $82,750 more retail sales per
year.

With that in mind, the
unititiated take their life sav-
ings, go in hock for some extra
money at the bank —and they
are in business.
Sales hold up alright but mixed
in with the checks that come in
at the end of the month are a few
envelopes with windows in them.
The man he bought from wants
his money. The landlord expects
another 30-days’ rent. The phone
company tells him how much he
talked and owes. There’s a light
bill, a water bill, a gas bill,
monthly night watchman fees
and a sum to be paid for the
garbage and trash service.
The federal government has
learned he’s there and a brown
envelope has a form or two
asking how many people work
for him, how much they are paid,
and would be please send in a
little bit to cover income taxes,
social security and unemploy-
ment insurance.
Mixed in with his customers is a
man soliciting membership in
the Chamber of Commerce, ano-
ther wanting him in the Lions
Club, more for other civic organi-
zations, a church committeeman
trying to get enough money
together for a new piano or a new
fellowship hall, a kid from the
school working on the annual
staff or a sports program that
needs advertisers’ donations,
and a good Samaritan raising
something to help a burned-out
family.
Every upturned palm is on the
arm of a customer or someone
who knows one.

Dear Editor:
I was at the Collin County FFA
Show auction Saturday and was
just totally shocked to see that
none of the Allen businesses
supported the Allen FFA boys
and girls. A hundred dollars or
so is not what I consider
support.
The boys and girls in the Allen
FFA have worked long and hard
with their FFA projects. What-
ever animal they were showing
took many hours of training and
grooming. This doesn’t begin to
include the price of the animal or
the monthly feed bills.
The businesses of Allen should
feel small for their lack of
support. I understand from con-
versations that I overheard that
Allen businesses have never
gone out to try to help the FFA
kids. What is with you Allen

from your income tax. This
means you are not really losng
anything. It is very good ad-
vertisement for business. People D)
of Allen think more of you for
being a supporter of the FFA
kids, our future adults of Allen.
The way it stands now, the
people of Allen shold feel a deep
shame for our Allen businesses.
