A Tarleton road update
Where did he come from?
Sports Information
Tarleton's basketball teams
will finally get back on the home
turf after a Monday road trip for
the women,
The men's team lost Saturday
night at St. Edward's University,
72-70, in a game decided in the
final seconds., Tarleton got off to
a slow start arid trailed 16-2 with
12:20 left in the half. It took the
Texans just three minutes to cut
that lead to two points at 18-16.
A three-point play by Ron
Campbell and a three-point
basket by Chris Givens gave the
Texans a 36-29 halftime
advantage.
Unfortunately, Tarleton
opened the second half as slowly
as the first and St. Edward's
regained the lead at 37-36 with
17:45 remaining. Tarleton trailed
by as much as six in the second
half but an Edward Milton three-
pointer with 30 seconds left in
the game knotted it at 70 apiece.
St. Edward's worked for a final
shot and the Hilltopper's Donnie
Wynn was fouled with six
seconds left. He made both shots
and Tarleton's three-point attempt
by Givens on the buzzer was
short.
Campbell, who hit 10 of 12
from the floor, led the Texans
with 24 points. Givens added 23
and Sean Walker scored 18 for the
Texans. Wynn led all scorers
with 26 points.
The loss dropped Tarleton to
10-8 on the season but despite
losing two games last week,
Tarleton Dunkel power rating
went up because of the strength
of the Texans' schedule.
The Texans will play their
fourth straight scholarship
opponent when they return to
action on Tuesday night against
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor
in a 7:30 p.m. with Louisiana
Christian University.
The Tarleton women are
coming off an excellent game on
Saturday where they knocked off
NAIA Division I Schreiner
College, 83-70. That win put
the TexAnn record at 12-8.
Karla Dick had perhaps her
bast game ever for the TexAnns.
The four-year letterwinner scored
a career high 31 points and hit
seven of 11 three-pointers, both
school records. In addition she
had six assists and nine rebounds.
Tina Tibbs had 22 points for
the TexAnns while hitting 12 of
16 free throws and Kaelie Butler
added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Tarleton held a 45-23 halftime

New track season, new members
By Roderick Richardson
Sports Editor
The Tarleton State men and
women track team are again
making a run to the Nationals,
but this time, they are doing it
with some new faces.
The track team are starting the
season with 58 athletes. Out of
those pai-tieipatihg, 25 are in the
travailing squad, but only 12 are
returning from last year's team,.
"We have a young team, both
boys and girls," said Carl
Pleasant, head coach of TSU
track. "We have a lot of spots to
fill. We just have to work hard,
and see what happens."
The athletes returning will be
the leaders of this young track
team, and Pleasant couldn't ask
for better student athletes.
Returning for the women's team
are All-American Audria Bierman
and Carmen Colon, Patrina Roy,
DD Watts, Wendy Mullins, and
Jenny Newton. Each of these
athletes have qualified for the
nationals last year.
On the men's side, two
runners are already running in
times that will qualify them for
the outdoor national meet.
Mario Barajas, who was 14th in
the nation in last year's marathon
competition, and Alex Martin are
both looking at another good
year.
But their is only one senior
returning to the men's team and
that is All-American Spivey
Thomas. Thomas was a
participant in Tarleton's sprint
and mile relay...
Other returners in the men's
team are Jerrod Lemrnons, Brain
Stark, Kirk Garner, and Chad
Jones.
- "We have a long road ahead of
us," said Pleasant. "It will be
tough at first, but with hard
training and a lot of discipline,
we can do it."
Tarleton's first meet will be
this Saturday in Fort Worth. It
is a one-half marathon sponsored
by the Fort Worth Runners
