Knight1 s got a new beef
By Matthew McGuire
TMS Campus, Special to The j -TAC
The storm clouds haven't
even rolled away and already
Bobby Knight is spouting off
about something new.
In a commercial to be aired
on NBC during the final round
of the Olympic basketball tour-
nament, the recently fired
Indiana University basketball
coach says that amateur ath-
letes should once again be
used on the United States bas-
ketball team.
The commercial is for Andl
sports apparel company, which
used controversy-prone Latrell
Sprewell as a spokesman in
1999, two years after he was
suspended for choking then-
coach P.J. Carlesimo.
"I think that you're naive if
you think the Olympics deal
with the spirit of the game,"
Knight says to lead-off a rough
edit of the commercial.
"I've always really enjoyed
the opportunity to see college
kids play. I like to see the
enthusiasm and the spirit of
the college kids representing
the United States in interna-
tional competition.,.. Put these
guys in the game.
Statements from high-profile
amateur athletes questioning
why they are not used in the
games will likely flank
Knight's statements in the final
edit.
Knight coached the 1984 U.S.
Olympic team, the last U.S.
team to use amateur players
and win the gold medal. The
U.S.'s 1988 loss in Seoul led to
pressure to open up the
Olympic sport to professionals.
Commercial makers filmed
Knight Thursday, September
21, in his Bloomington, Ind.,
home, and editors were expect-
ed to finish editing the minute-
long spot this week.
The commercial marks
Knight's return to the spotlight
after being fired as Indiana's
basketball coach two weeks
ago,
IU president Myles Brand
fired Knight September 10 after
months of "unacceptable
behavior," the most recent
• example taking place when the
legendary coach grabbed a
freshman by the arm after the
student said, "What's up,
Knight?"
Knight claimed he simply
was trying to teach Kent
Harvey — the stepson of a
Knight critic and former local
talk show host — a lesson in
manners.

But American Tom Dolan,
self-described "old-school"
swimmer, has a very
simple explanation for
the eight world
records that were set
at the Sydney
International Aquatic
Center the first two days of
these Olympics:
"Fast swimming is fast swim-
ming," Dolan said.
He paused.
"It's a fast pool, too."
More and more records are
expected to fall at the Sydney
International Aquatics Center
this week, possibly including
the 200-meter butterfly, in

finals Tuesday night. Malchow,
who held the world record
entering the Games, set a new
Olympic rccotd i,n tfjp.prelim-
- inariesand another Olympic
record in the semifinals, and
"Fast swimming is
fast swimming,"
has said the world record could
fall, again, too.
"You've got fast swimmers, a
fast pool... anything could hap-
pen," Malchow, a silver medal-
ist in 1996, said recently.
"The way everything's going,
it looks like you have to come
close to a world record in every
race to win it."
The key to the "fast pool" here
is this: The swimmers are mak-
ing waves, partly because the
pool is not.
Turbulence is as big an
enemy in international competi-
tion as the person swimming
beside you.
Ripples create choppy water,
and choppy water slows swim-
mers, and therefore times.
"Turbulence," said Greg

Thomas, venue press manager,
"is a bad thing."
The Olympic competition
pool has been designed with
several good things to help
rrielt waves.
Perhaps most important, the
depth of the water throughout
the pool is three meters,
one-third deeper than the
PIN A standard.
The extra depth cush-
ions ripples that can reflect
off the bottom of the pool.
The pool is 10 lanes wide,
and although only the middle
eight are used in competition,
the extra two lanes allow side
waves more room to dissipate.
In addition, the so-called "wet
deck" is at water level, allowing
waves to wash over the side
and through drains instead of
richocheting into'the pool,
Water temperature at the aquat-
ic center is set at 27 degrees
Celsius, with the pool deck
thermometer set at 29.
That helps keep the swim-
mers from losing too much
body heat outside of the water.
"Anti-wave" lane ropes are
designed to eliminate ripples
between lanes, and the floor and
walls of the pool are textured to
absorb energy.
