I do know, however, what its
like to pick and chop cotton, to

it's like to take college courses,
to be a son, a brother, an uncle,

what it's like to serve in military

easier than' ever to offer an
opinion about an incident or to
second-guess the actions of
others. I wonder: "Do others see
they know. I've seen what
they've seen and experienced
every day. When I hear others
say they wouldn’t do my "job"
for anything. I smile to myself.
For despite the pain, complexity
and danger, I Would not even
consider another job. So if you
ask what it takes to be a deputy,
there could be a few things that I
do not tell you. Those listed
above and others.

What does it take to be a
deputy sheriff or a law enforce-
ment officer? This is a question
that I have been asked many
times over the years. The re-
quirements have changed drasti-
cally over the years, and nor-
mally I will tell those who ask
the question the number of
classroom hours required.
Of course, this is after a
background check is made along
with a physical, drug screen, and
psychological evaluation. Then
after all the hours of education
it's like to try to save a man
from harming himself or others
and then having him turn on me,
doing his.best to hurt me. There
have also been many humorous
and lighthearted occasions.
I wonder if others are aware
of the profession's "behind the
scenes" angst: the pain and suf-
fering, the anxiety, the search
for understanding, the attempt to
rationalize the unthinkable and
the unbelievable things that I
have seen. I also wonder if oth-
ers really understand what it
means to the community when
an officer is injured, when an of-
ficer is "down".
I chose this profession be-
cause I felt - and still feel - a
passion for my chosen vocation.
I have no death wish, nor do I
wake up wanting to hurt or kill
another person. I will, however,
put my life in harm's way for a
complete stranger and I won't
hesitate to work toward finding
a solution to whatever problems
