Dance Masks of Mexico, an ex-
hibition of 48 carved and ex-
quisitely unique wooden masks,
dating from 1850 to the present,
opens at the Dallas Historical
Society, Hall of State, Fair Park,
beginning September 9, 1980.
Dance Masks is part of a one-
year tour organized by the
Smithsonian Traveling Exhibi-
tion Service (SITES). The masks
are drawn from collections at the
National Museum of Natural
History, Smithsonian Institu-
tion. Some were donated by the
Mexican government, with the
largest number belonging to the
extensive and well-donated
Donald Condry collection. The ex-
hibit is made possible through a
grant from the Meadows Founda-
tion, Inc., with Acai de Mexico
and the Dallas Historical Society
acting as local sponsors.
Thousands of years before the
arrival of Europeans, masks were
made in most of the New World.
The tradition of mask-making
and masked dancing still lives to-
day in many local Mexican
fiestas, reflecting the two faces of
Mexico’s culture—-Indian and
Spanish. This glimpse into the
dualism of the Mexican culture is
an informative highlight of the
exhibition. The masks are highly
individualistic, but they do reveal
past and present religious and
cultural beliefs. The persistence
of Indian archetypes
demonstrates the strength of oral
tradition in remote villages, while
the influence of Christian or
Western stereotypes testifies to
the diversity and adaptability of
present-day Mexican culture.
In Pre-Hispanic Mexico, the In-
dians used masks in battle, in
burial rites, to ward off evil
spirits, and to cure the sick. To-
day masks are used in elaborate
carnivals and Mexican celebra-
tions, and still have a serious pur-
pose—to ask for rain or good
crops, or to recall the history of
the people. Ancient masks were
made from stone, clay, wax,
leather, bone or precious metals.
Contemporary masks are general-
ly made of wood or paper-mache,
decorated with paint, ribbons,
horsehair, beads, strips of leather
and animal teeth.
The human face, animals and
devils are usually the subject
matter, and it is in the combina-
tions of these forms that the
prevalent dualisms of Mexican
culture are so evident. One mask
in the exhibition combines the
form of a bat with a human face
between the bat’s spreading
wings. Other animal forms
represented include armadillos,
monkeys and roosters.

verted the Indian deities into
