Sir Gordon Richards, the world’s
top jockey, rode Pinza to a four
length victory today over Queen
Elizabeth's Areoie in the 174th Ep-
som Derby, his first Derby triumph
in 33 years of racing.
Earlier this week Queen Elisa-

today sallow-faced Richards turned
an the queen's fine colt Aureole
and out-distanced the royal chest-
nut in the last two furlongs aboard
Sir Victor Sassoons’ colt.
This was Richard’s 28th Derby
ride, but his 4,670 victories did
pot include a win in this great
nile and a half race for three year

the Aga Khan’s Shikampur.
Shikampur led, for about three
quarters of the race, but faced
like cheap calico in the final push.
Nearula, a favorite for over a
month until he developed a bit of
lameness last week, finished ninth.
Good Brandy, owned by Robert
Clark of Upperville, Va., and the
only American-owned horse in the
field, finished tenth.
An estimated crowd of 500,000

land's flat racing classic. High in
the royal tax was the queen, the
Duke of Edinburgh, the queen
mother end Princess Margaret.
Their guest was Crown Prince
Akihito of Japan.
Pinza was timed in two minutes,
35.0 seconds. Sassoon, of the inter-
national banking family, won $53,-

An Irish Hospital sweepstakes is
based ea the result of the race.
At the end, when Pinza won, the
queen had a gracious smile for the
winner. The last time a reigning
British monarch won the race was

The queen invited Pinza's tri-

Norma n Barties aad Richards —
into the royal box when she con-
gratulated them on a fine win.
“The queen eaid how pleased she
was," said Richards.
