AMARILLO - It's often been said that going winless in a
district season is about as difficult as going undefeated
Hereford’s boys proved that Tuesday night here, tripp-
ing Palo Duro. 60-59, in an exciting District 3-5A basket-
ball game before fewer than 500 fans
The victory snapped an 11-game losing streak by the
Whitefaces, and it marked their first league triumph,
after 14 straight setbacks
The contest was close throughout It was tied 11 dif-
ferent tunes, and the lead changed hands 19 times, before
Hereford went ahead for good 156-55) with 2 50 left to play
Palo Duro got within a point 158-57 i with 47 seconds to
go. but Terry Shelton scored five seconds later to give the
Herd a three-point 60-57 > cushion
Then, Gene Polley dropped in a short jumper with 27
seconds remaining to bring the [kins within a point 160-591
again, but then missed two shots from close range in the
final dozen seconds as Hereford preserved its first district
victory this season.
Hereford, now 1-14 in league play and 6-21 overall, en-
joyed the biggest lead of the game (11-6) with 2:38 left in

for the school with 127 blocks

percent Palo Duro canned 27 of 53 attempts for 50.9 per-
cent
Hereford actually won the game from the charity stripe,
hitting 10 of 17, compared to five of seven by the Dons, now
8-7 in district play and 13-12 overall
For Hereford, last night's game was a marked tur-
nabout from the Jan 14 meeting, when PD prevailed.

Amarillo High and Tascosa won Tuesday, leaving the
two deadlocked at 9-6 in the district standings The San-
dies rolled past Coronado, 78-51, while the Rebels nipped
Monterey. 64-63 thanks to 28 points from James Dawn
