I believe we have all of the elements in place, and we have the foun-
dation here for Hereford to make orderly growth to a city of 25,000
people. All we need is the vision and will to make it happen. Certain-
ly, I cannot accomplish all of that by myself as a city commissioner,
but I believe the city commission must set the tone for progress, in
order for it to happen. I ask for your vote to serve as City Commis-
sioner Place 2.

What is the key challenge for the t ards in '33?
When you win the question always is Will you repeat'’
Hou do iou ansuer that question ’
Well obviously nobody knows the answer for sure
The < losest you can come is to say that if the players
perform as they did last year and no one gets hurt too badly
and the manager doesn t mess up too many games we ve got
as good a chance as anyone
Hon t the t ards face some pretty stiff competition — from
the Fxpos the Phillies and the Pirates, in particular
The truth of course is that four different teams have fin-
ished first in the National League's Eastern Division in the
past four years
And three of them including the Cardinals last year, have
gone on to win the world championship
So it's not easy and it does take a combination of skill and
luc k to repeat
What can the fans expect this season from St Louis’
Our front line team promises to be the same as that you
saw last October Darrell Porter catching Keith Hernan
dez Tommy Herr Ozzie Smith and Ken Oberkefell in the
infield and Lonnie Smith Dane Iorg, Willie McGee David
Green and George Hendrick in the outfield
Ue II have to pick three of the five outfielders each day.
but perhaps they can be platooned effectively
Hou about the pitching ’
Our starters still appear to be Joaquin Andujar Bob
Forsch John Stuper Dave LaPoint and possibly John Martin
or Eri Rasmussen with a bullpen headed by Bruce
Sutter and also including left hander Jim Kaat and right
handers Doug Bair Jeff Lahti and Jeff Keener
} ou ve got a couple of other new pitchers, too
Some new fac es among the pitchers who will receive close
scrutiny are left handers Jerry Garvin -purchased from the
Toronto organization and Dave Van Ohien signed as a free
agent from the Mets organization) and right hander Kurt
Kepshire drafted from the Cincinnati Reds
You xe lost a feu players from last year's team
Over the winter three players who helped us quite a bit in
1982 left our roster for one reason or another
Number two catcher Gene Tenace opted for free agency
and signed with the Pirates Reserve infielder Julio Gon
zalez ►. •• •. traded as w. as his right, and was released
And Steve Mura a 12 victory starting pitcher was selected
by the White Sox as their compensation for losing a type-A
player in the free agent draft
Hou uill sou make up for those losses'*
The signing of free agent Jamie Quirk should more than
adequately fill Tenace s spot with super base stealer Glenn
Brummer as another back up catcher, replacement for Juho
Gonzalez could be either Rafael Santana or Kelly Paris, to
go along with super sub Mike Ramsey as second-line infield-
ers. and Martin or Rasmussen could be the fifth starter
instead of Mura
You seem confident going into the season
And 162 games from now we ll be able to tell you more
Jerry White in a 3-2 victory.
Meanwhile, four hot teams
— the California Angels, New
York Yankees, Minnesota
Twins and Chicago White Sox
— kept rolling
Rod Carew's tie-breaking
single highlighted a three-run
fifth inning as the Angels
defeated the San Diego
Padres 5-2 for their 10th vic-
tory in the last 11 games
Oscar Gamble's home run
with two out in the bottom of
the 10th inning enabled the
Yankees to defeat the
Houston Astros 6-5 and ex-
tend their winning streak to
six games Bob Meacham
and Brad Gulden also
homered for the winners.
Consecutive RBI singles by
(jenny Faedo and Bobby Mit-
chell with one out in the 11th
inning boosted the Twins past
the Texas Rangers 5-3. Min-
nesota's Gary Ward drove in
his 28th run of the spnng with
a first-inning single as the
Twins raised their exhibition
recurd to 15-6
Home runs by Pat Tabler
and Jerry Hairston powered
the White Sox to a 5-3 victory
over the St Louis Cardinals
their sixth in succession and
10th in the last 11 games
Floyd Banister pitched seven
scoreless innings for the
White Sox
The hard-hitting
Milwaukee Brewers got a
taste of their own medicine
when Oakland s Wayne Gross
smashed a grand slam home
run to key a 22-hit attack as
the A's outslugged the
Brewers 16-13 in a game that
featured eight home runs
Davey Lopes and Jeff Bur-
roughs also connected for the
A's. while Milwaukee's 16-hit
alack included home runs by
Robin Yount, Gorman
Thomas. Don Money, Ted
Simmons and Ben Oglivie.
Ron Cey went 4-for-4, in-
cluding a three-run homer,
raising his spring average to
477 and pacing the Chicago
Cubs to a 10-7 victory over the
San Francisco Giants. The
home run off Bill Laskey in
the third inning was Cey’s
fifth of the spring and second
in two days. Leon Durham
had a two-run homer and a
pair of singles for the Cubs
Bob Homer's fourth home
run of the spring highlighted
a three-run first inning and
Randy Johnson squeezed
home the deciding run in the
seventh as the Atlanta
Braves edged the Kansas Ci-
ty Royals 6-5.
Dan Driessen homered and
tripled and the Cincinnati
Reds scored an unearned run
in the 10th inning to nip the
Detroit Tigers 5-4. Dave Con-
cepcion scored the winning
run from second base when
Detroit shortstop Alan Tram-
mell let Jeff Jones' two-out
grounder go under his glove
for an error
Lary Sorensen allowed one
run in seven innings and the
Cleveland Indians rolled to an
11-2 rout of the Seattle
Mariners, who committed six
errors
Two-run homers by Dan
Ford and Eddie Murray
helped the Baltimore Orioles
defeat the University of
Miami 14-7.
