Hereford High School lost a pair of
non-district tennis matches Tuesday
at Canyon, with Canyon winning the
boys’ match 6-3 and winning the
girls’ match 7-2.
On Saturday, the HHS teams will
play at home in District 3-5A mat-
ches against Amarillo High School
and Lubbock Monterey High School.
Those who recorded wins for the
Hereford boys’ varsity at Canyon
up by a pass completion from Cavin
to Jim Andrews.
Russell Backus caught a pass from
Cavin for the two-point conversion.
"Our passing game was much im-
proved with passing of quarterback
Robert Cavin to receivers Jim An-
drews, Russell Backus and James
Hillwig. We dropped several and had
a 60-yard scoring play on a pass to
Backus called back,” said Coach
Tommy Bowling.
"We had several outstanding
defensive plays highlighted by a
blocked punt by Heath Dollar setting
up our score.
"We are getting good efforts but
just keep beating ourselves,” Bowl-
ing adds.
Tuesday were Kevin Hansen and
Brad Barrett in singles matches, and
Hansen and Chuck Garcia in a
doubles match.
Hereford girls who won singles
matches were Natalie Sims and Mis-
ty Stokes.

A 21-14 victory over Plainview
Blue Thursday in Hereford upped the

The Stanton eighth grade team lost
to Plainview Blue 8-0, with the Plain-

eighth grade.
Plainview Blue gained a 6-0 lead
play in the second quarter. The extra
points attempt was not good.
Early in the fourth quarter, a Stan-
ton drive was kept alive in Plainview
Blue territory when Plainview was
called for a facemask penalty on a
tackle of Stanton ball carrier Kelvin
Brown.
Stanton then moved in for a
touchdown, with Keith Brown
Stanton drove for a game-winning
touchdown, which was scored with 55
seconds left in the contest. John
Wilson caught an eight-yard
touchdown pass from Pat Mercer
Jimmy Linen kicked the extra
point to give Stanton its final margin
of 21-14.
"Our offense played well. We did a
good job of keeping our poise on the
winning touchdown drive,” said
Stanton ninth grade Coach James
Salinas.
"Our offensive line-Billy Burnam,
Vincent Garcia, Jimmy Linen, Ricky
Rieves, Marcus Marquez and Pat
Rhodes-did a super job. We were
very fortunate to win. Plainview got
after us,” Salinas adds.
The Stanton ninth grade defense
intercepted two passes. Anthony
Gonzales intercepted a Plainview
pass with about three minutes left in
the first half, and Gilbert Juarez in-
tercepted a pass early in the fourth
