Commission Merchant,
Unrequitted Love.
Maggie—Well, dear me, George may be a
nice young man, but, gracious, so gauky !
See how ungarbly his clothes fit.
Mamma—Well, but daughter he is sober,
steady and attentive to his business.
Maggie—May be so, dear ma, that’s.com-
mon rumor; but a man who is careless in his
dress is apt to be so in other matters. Con-
trast him with Charlie ; Charlie, it is true,
has not at present so good a position, but he
will have it, for his dress is tidy and nice. I
know he will win his way to Cavor among
men; his new suit isa perfect love.
When he entered the theatre with me the
other night he attracted universal attention.
I really could net resist the temptation to
enquire where they were made and he told
me Messrs. Bernstein & Cohn, on Con-
gress street, next to the Bank Saloon, were
his Tailors. I could almost love that Tailor,
for his skill. No ma, George may love me
hut he must go, I can never, never love an
ungentlemanly dressed man. If he would
go to Bernstein’s and order a perfect suit of
clothes the case might be otherwise.
Has opened a FIRST CLASS LADIES
SALOON ather old stand, corner Main and
Texas Avenue, where she will, from this
date, serve to her lady customers the best
of Oysters in every style; also Coffee and
Chocolate at all hours.
The Confectionery Department will
be conducted as usual, where all the Candies
can constantly be found to suit every taste.
We have received a circular from
General J. B. Robertson, Superin-
tendent Bureau of Immigration,
which that gentleman has sent out
over Texas for the expressed pur-
pose of preventing, so far as that is
possible, the evil effects of the late
abolition of that Bureau. He sug-
crop the following year.
I confidently believe that the plan
here suggested, if carried out, will
secure to each and every county, by
the ensuing fall, from fifty to one
hundred good and industrious fami-
lies.
A careful investigation of the vote
of Texas at the last election (allow-
ing that one hundred thousand vo-
ters could not vote for want of a
year’s residence) shows that our pop-
ulation is now approximating to two
millions. A mild effort on the part
of the authorities and people, for the
obtaining and distribution of the ne-
cessary information, will give us foui
millions by the time of taking the
decade census in 1880.
The evidences which I have re-
ceived in this office induce the belief
that the interest of immigration will
materially suffer if all official efforts
are abandoned; therefore, I make
the above suggestion.

to its influence.

To those interminable gentlemen
of Boswellian proclivities who deem
that our friend Coke has “earned”
the office of United States Senator by
simply trying to -do his duty as Gov-

the new Constitution, and to secure
his own re-election, we desire to pro-
pound an interrogatory which cer-

may deem significant, to-wit: Do
they or do they not hold that the vari.

in the affirmative. If any Boswell
