fruits and vegetables so treated which may come
to the consumer.with.an excess residue of these
sprays are apples, pears, cherries, currants, celery,
cabbage, cauliflowen and broccoli. Before these
fruits and vegetables reach the market, they are
cleaned. But frequently the cleansing is incomplete
and they are left contaminated.
The eating of such improperly cleaned fruits and
vegetables may give-rise to chronic lead poisoning,
to arsenic poisoning, or, when fluorine compounds
are used, to characteristic changes in tooth enamel
termed mottling. i
The fact that the resulting poison symptoms
may at first be vague and that the condition may
develop insidiously complicates the whole problem,
for it is not easy to trace these vague symptoms to
the patient’s use of improperly cleansed fruits and
vegetables.
Chronic lead poisoning in man produces anemia,
pallor, painful intestinal colic, a veriety of injuries
to the nervous system and destructive changes in
the kidneys and liver. Tolerance for lead varies. In
some persons acute symptoms may develop on the
ingestion of a small amount of lead.
Fruits are particularly the food of the sick and
the infirm, whose susceptibility to the injurious ef-
fects of lead and arsenic may have been increased
by disease.

Their youthfulness is typical of a grow-

the Federal Bureau of Investigation at
Washington reveal that of all arrests in the
■ JJnited States listed for 1934, about 56 per
cent were of persons under 40. The largest
age groun is 19 years! From 15 years up-
wards, the criminality of the age groups in-
creases rapidly until 19 is reached. Nine-,
teen is “the dangerous age” for youth.
Why should crime appeal to boys hardly
old enough to shave? The answer ip no
secret. Sanford Bates gave it in gist when
he said: “The craving for distinction and
