Professional Workshop

All students of South Texas aire
invited to attend the Third Annual
Alumni Professional Orientation
Day which will be held at South
Texas, Saturday, September 16,
beginning at 9 a.m. Dr. Byron P.
Davis is serving as alumni
chairman and Cathy Parker as
student body chairman. The
half-day workshop, sponsored by
the alumni, brings together small
groups of students and 20 at-
torneys to discuss various areas of
legal specialization, require-
ments, problems and day-to-day
experiences. Many of the speak-
ers are South Texas graduates.
Topics have been chosen by the
alumni/student committee. The
speakers have been arranged in
sequence so that there will be the
least conflict for those who wish
to attend more than one session.
The program will "tart at 9 a.m.
Saturday, September 16 and will
deal with two areas of criminal
law. Ted Poe, cheif prosecutor for
the 228th District Court, Ira P.
Jones, chief prosecutor of the
176th District Court, Stu Stewart
and Mike Hinton, both of the
DA's office, will discuss prosecu-

a. ra. with William E. Gray and
Ray Bass HI in the area of

Also at 9 a.m., William D.
Luther and Gerald S. Gordon will
lead a session on real property
transactions in the practice of
law. Those interested in inter-
national law will have the oppor-
tunity to meet with Carlos J.
Longoria and explore this area of
law.
At 10 a.m., students also have
a choice of attending a session on
domestic relations and famUy law
with Attorney Pat R. Lykos and
Joe Kegans, Judge of District
Court #230 or workman's com-
pensation with specialist Leo
Freedman.
James S. WaUis Jr. will deliver
a presentation on workman's
compensation. Also during the
professional orientation, Jane
Yount, a STCL graduate, will
provide information concerning
International Law.
Orientation A Success
Over 200 freshman students
took advantage of the Annual
Freshmen Orientation held by the
Student Bar Association of South
Texas. The orientation, held
Wednesday, August 23, began at
about 6:30 p.m. and lasted until
10 p.m.
The event which is devised to
introduce new students to South
Texas, was labelled a "complete
success."
Dr. Charles Weigel gave a
"Welcome to the School" intro-
duction. He later talked to the
new students about what they
may expect during their first
semesters. He emphasized the
importance of not being a "total
student." He suggested that the
students give equal time to other
concerns such as eating properly
and maintaining their physical
fitness during their law school
years.

22-24 — LSD-ABA Fall Roundtable Conference
presentation in which he explain-
ed the important aspects of how
to study, briefing cases, class
preparation, recitation, and how
to write a final exam.
While Blood explained to the
new students what law classes
may entail, Weigel lectured the
many spouses on the complica-
tions law school may present in
their family life.
Also at the orientation was
Janet Littlejohn, SBA president,
who spoke on other activities
within the school. Bill Campion of
the Texas Bar spoke to the group
about the bar's organization and
Ken Harrison of the Houston Bar
explained the necessity of prop-
erly filing the Declaration of
Intent to Study Law.
The event this year was follow-
ed by a social hour in which
SHELBY'S, a favorite local pub,
provided 20 cases of Coors beer.
Bill Ford and Charles Soech-
ting, freshman senators, were
responsible for the intricate plan-
ning and the " complete success"
of the orientation.
