Students see new look for STCL bookstore
By Lucille Hollander
Staff Writer
This story started out as a
simple news story about the STCL
bookstore expansion. The
bookstore, which is actually
leased by Barnes and Noble,
added some space this summer.
But as * I spoke with the
bookstore's new manager, Tim
Jackson, it was apparent that this
store was actually quite
extraordinary, and that the
expansion was simply a facet of
a business committed to
outstanding customer service.
The newly remodeled store is
larger. The planning for the
expansion has been years in the
making as Tim, and Brad before
him, wanted space to include a
larger selection of study aids and
other books to help students. .
Tim's career has been unusual.
He has a degree in Theater Arts
but prior to his graduation signed
on with Barnes and Noble as a
temporary employee. His career
took off, and from a temporary
employee, he was soon selected
to become a bookstore manager.
A few years later, he became
.
manager of the UH Law School
Bookstore, and has recently
become manager of the STCL
Bookstore. Tim recounts that
when he first began everyone
asked if he was the 'new Brad'.
He says Brad is a friend and
mentor, and actually nominated
him for his replacement when he
moved on to Texas A&M.
He truly loves what he does.
As Tim explains, "It's not about
Bookstore expands to bring new conveinence and space to STCL and it students. STCL Bookstore has benefited
from the managers placed here from Barnes and Noble. Our new manager is Tim Jackson.
being a salesman; it's about
helping students succeed in law
school."
The national scope of success
exhibited by the STCL bookstore
is quite extraordinary. It is #2 in
the entire Barnes ahd Noble
company for sales per square foot
(a bookstore in Manhattan is the
only one surpassing his store, says
Tim).
Tim wants to do more for
STCL. "What I would like to do
is to give and help more on
campus; that we do more than just
sell textbooks."
Enthusiasm, hard work, and an
outstandingly exceptional attitude
has made Tim a wonderful
addition to the STCL family.
I stop by the bookstore often
and not just for books. They have
supplies, a wonderful array of
snacks, various STCL shirts, caps,
other wear, and of course always
a friendly hello.
Recently, I told Tim I wanted
a red and white cap from the
shipment that was going to come
in the following week. The
elementary school where I work
is making efforts to try to see that
all of the students will have the
opportunity to go to college. Part
of this effort is to change their
expectations so they feel that
college can be part of their future.
My school has ordered a
display case where the teachers
and staff are encouraged to donate
a cap from their school. We are
planning to expand the students'
contact with 'college culture' so
pupils who may not have even
thought about college can see it
as part of their future choices.
Not only did Tim tell me he
would hold a cap for me, he
offered to donate it to the display.
The STCL bookstore is a tale
of success. It is warm, friendly,
accessible, and sells much more
than textbooks. The staff is open
to ideas and suggestions. Most
importantly, they always have
time for a friendly greeting and
great conversation. 1 find that its
national success is extraordinary,
and I hope we beat Manhattan
next year!
