n tbe "Modus uperanui" oi nousckeep-na-
with special reference to having
things cool a flrst-class prize should be
given to the "San Antonio Ice Machine
company."
Some eighteen months ago Mr. Jacob
Sohuehl who by-the-way Is a gradu-
ate of one of the best engineering and
machinist sohools or Karlsruhe Baden
Germany conceived some new Ideas In
tne construction oi u acninery tor manu-
facturing Ice.
In connection with these he has In-
vented various new devloes the prlncl
si two of wmcn were patenteu in tne
nlted Slates Patent office at Washing
ton under date of Maroh 10th and May
2ith 188(1. One of these Is a devise for
an automatlo self oiling apparatus fur
the complete machinery and ammonia
pumps another Is to keep the oil out ot
tbe colls. Alio a devise In caseapfthe stuf-
ling of tbe ammonia pumps getting heat-
ed to cool tbem off In less than a nilnuto
by Introducing liquid ammonia In con-
nection with tbe oil and nn possible
chance exists for any loss of ammonia
slnoe tbe lower part of tbe pump Is con-
stantly filled with oil two Inches deep.
roe macninery is worncu wun less wa-
ter than any other machine In propor-
tion to strength and alze. The motive
power Is supplied by an eight horse
power steam engine of the latest and
most Improved pattern nnd capablo to
produce four thousand pounds of Ice
every twenty-four hours. The boiler
which supplies the steam Is of twelve
horse power resting on a furnace which
Is a model of construction and contains
some Inovatlons that are new novel and
u'eful one of whloh Is an apparatus by
the means of which nil the black
coal 'smoke Is consumed the
method Is as simple as It Is inexpensive
and consists of heated air Hues begin-
ning nnd entering In front and on the
sides of the furnace and runlng back to
the combusting chamber. Persons
looking from a distance at tbe tall chim-
ney would think that the establishment
was at a standstill as no smoke can be
seen Issuing from tbe smoke stack.
Tbe whole "modus operandi" Is so
simple In construction that it required
only two days for Mr. Schuehle to In-
struct two young men In the art and
mecnanicat secrets ot uanonng anu
manipulating the whole macninery
and Its various necessary adjunots In
all details from raising steam to pulling
the blocks of loo out of tho freezing
tank. Mr. Schuehle Is an old resident
of this country having been In this state
for 17 years and out of this for 13 years
a resident of San Antonio where he was
me urst in company witu it. u. .iixon
to start tbe Alamo Iron foundry In
1S70.
This la the fourth machine of Its kind
and mode of construction that has been
erected In Texas. They all work
like a charm In their respect
ive places. Tbe first one on
this plan was set up for Mr
Win. iloelllng Sr.. one of San Anto-
nio's most enterprising citizens. Tbe
second one was set as a refrigerator and
Ice manufacturing machine at Gonzales
Texas and which Is now In a splendid
working order ine intra one was set
up some short time baok on the frontier
which Is also doing splendid work. The
latest and fourth as already said Is tbe
one built at tbe eorner of avenue 11 and
Klghth street opposite Mr. Wm. Ester's
brewery and Is set up with special ref-
erence as a model and sample. The
company Invite visitors from tbe coun-
try to come and Inspect this now won-
der of modern mechanism that now
manufactures Ice at less cost than It was
ever made before and at an actual rate
in any quantity or one-iourin oi iue
present cost of production. '
Mr. Schuehle Is expressing himself In
highest words of praise about Mr. K. M.

aid of Mr. Fowler have brought almost a
complete revolution In tbo art of mak-
ing lea. To this must be added that
Mr. Schuohle has under practical con-
struction for which letters ot patent
have already been applied a new and
model apparatus by which Ice cream
can be frozen at from the smallest to the
largest quantities without Ice and de-
vised specially for the benefit of private
families as well as parties and balls.
