I jumped as the alarm on my travel clock announced 6 a.m.
(quite a number of years ago). “Surely it isn’t time to get up
already,” I mumbled, reaching to shut it off.
My roommate was sluggish, too. “Seems like we just got to
bed,” the friendly Oklahoma office employee commented, stirr-
ing. “Guess we spent too much time getting acquainted,” she
added. I nodded in agreement.
By 6:45 a.m. we were at the building where the conference was
to be held. “We’re here for Writer’s Conference,” we informed
the security officer. The lock clicked. We entered and walked
down the hall toward the cafeteria.

My new friend chose bacon, scrambled egg, a made-from-
scratch biscuit and coffee. I duplicated her selection.
“I can’t keep from feeling a little apprehensive,” I confided,
as we sat down at a table near a window. “This is my first Chris-
tian Writer’s Conference. I keep wondering if I’m really
qualified--am I humble enough? There are doctors of divinity
here, college deans, preachers and preacher’s wives, as well as
editors and publishers.”
“You know, I was feeling the same...” She stopped in the mid-
dle of her sentence. Our attention was directed toward the serv-
ing area.
“I tol’ you, Woman, to see ’bout them other biscuits,” a voice
was raised in anger.
“You dit’n tell me no sich thing,” another replied, equally as
riled.
“I shore did, And now, you done gone and let ’em burn, and
we ain’t got enough for this breakfus’ run. Jes’ whatche think
we gonna do now?”
“It’s alright, Ladies. It’s alright. Everything will be alright.
Now, just calm down,” the cafeteria manager said firmly in even
tones. “You have loaves of bread, don’t you? Some people prefer
toast anyhow.” Turning to one worker, he said, “Now, you go
get started making toast.” To the other, he said, “and you stay
here and explain that the bread will be few minutes late.”
Whereupon, one worker glared at the other, then turned on
her heel and flounced back to the kitchen without another word.
An editor was heading toward our table bearing his breakfast
tray containing cereal, milk and juice.
“Good morning,” he said cheerily. “Oh,” he said, nodding
toward the area where the commotion took place, “don’t pay
any attention to that. We’re all just human, aren’t we?”
I smiled at the Okie and she smiled back at me.
“What did you say, Sir?” I asked, realizing that the editor
was still speaking.
“How do you feel about the conference?” he asked, directing
his question to both of us. “Are you ready to begin?”
“Yes,” we answered in unison, picking up our notebooks to
leave for the conference room. “We’re looking forward to it,”
one of us said confidentially, while the other readily nodded a
ditto.
