Ron Howard's 'Alamo' filming expected to begin near Austin
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Film
producer Ron Howard's movie
about the Alamo and the Texas
Revolution is ready for its first
take.
Filming was expected to
start Monday at a sprawling
movie set on more than 40
acres near Dripping Springs,
southwest of Austin.
Director John Lee Hancock
was hired by Disney to take
over directing chores from
Howard, who continues as an
"Alamo" producer. The film's
budget dropped from $125 mil-
lion to the $75 million range.
The movie is expected to open
in December,
Howard has said he was
attracted to the subject of the
battle for Texas independence
because it is compelling drama.
"It's a pretty amazing feel-
ing. A lot of times when you
work on a movie you have to
create the world around you,"
Hancock told the San Antonio
Express-News in Monday's edi-
tions.

Bush confronts doubts on economy, Iraq
WASHINGTON (AP) - As talks of war intensified, President
Bush on Sunday rehearsed a State of the Union speech that is
meant to confront Americans' doubts about an attack on Iraq and
to sell his plans for new tax cuts and a Medicare overhaul.
Bush attended church and jogged Sunday morning, then spent
time practicing the address with confidante Karen Hughes. He
had no public appearances scheduled, giving himself plenty of
time to prepare for the Tuesday night speech.
Dow falls below 8,000 mark at 7,976
NEW YORK (AP) - Fears of war pummeled Wall Street on
Monday, pushing the Dow Jones industrials below the 8,000 level for
the first time in three months and sending the entire market lower for
the seventh time in eight sessions.
At midday, the Dow was down 154.82, or 1.9 percent, at
7,976.19, having dropped 5.3 percent last week and to levels last
seen in October. It was the Dow's fifth triple-digit decline in six ses-
sions.
Investors unloaded shares as U.N. weapons inspectors reported
that Iraq failed to cooperate in helping their searches for arms and
said that inspections need more time. Investors were also cautious
ahead of President Bush's State of the Union address Tuesday.
Net worm causes some more disruptions
NEW YORK (AP) - A virus-like Internet worm that had crip-
pled tens of thousands of computers over the weekend caused
limited network disruptions Monday as employees returned to
work.
Though the worm had been largely contained by Saturday
evening, security experts saw a slight increase in attacks
Monday as the work days began in Asia and Europe.
