' TOM TOM 'CLUB - SIRE RECORDS
THIS TWELVE MEMBER TROOP CREATES MUSIC WHICH IS AN H
UNUSUAL SYNTHESIS OF EXOTIC PERCUSSIONS, DISCO BEAT AND
NEW WAVISH VOCALS. MY FAVORITE CUT IS "GENIUS OF LOVE".
THE SPLENDID INTERWEAVING OF RYTHYMS MAKES FOR GREAT
LISTENING, ALTHOUGH IT's REALLY A BIT TOO SLOW FOR ENER-
GETIC DANCING. THE VOCALS ARE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND
IN SOME PLACES, BUT THEY'RE ALWAYS INTERESTING TO LISTEN
TO. "VARIETY" BEST SUMS UP THE VOCALS FOR THE TOM TOM
CLUB. THEY MAKE ALL KINDS OF SOUNDS ON THIS ALBUM.
"WORDY RAPPINGHOOD" IS A NEAT TUNE BUT RATHER MONOTONOUS
AND LENGTHY.
THE "TOM TOM THEME" SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING YOU'D HEAR
. ON A REMAKE POLYNESIAN ISLAND. THE OTHER CUTS ARE ALL
PRETTY GOOD. THEY ARE ALL WRITTEN BY THE TOM TOM CLUB AND
HAVE THAT DISTINCTIVE JINGLE-LIKE SOUND. THE ALBUM COVER
IS A COLORFUL JUVENISH DRAWING WHICH DEPICTS THE HAPPY-
GO LUCKY TONE OF THE MUSIC. A FRIEND OF MINE COINED THE
PHRASE, "CRAYOLA MUSIC" TO DESCRIBE THE TOM TOM CLUB AND
WHEN KATE PIERSON (B-52's), VISITED THE ROCKSY AFTER THEIR
RECENT HOUSTON GIG SHE REQUESTED TOM TOM CLUB. I THINK IT's
VERY UNIQUE MUSIC AND MOST PEOPLE WILL ENJOY IT.

WOW! WHAT A SYTHESIS! POP, JAZZ JINGLE DRUMS AND DANCE
BEAT, ALL IN ONE - TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? POSSIBLY. BUT HAIR-
CUT 100 DEFINTELY PULLS IT OFF. IF YOU LIKE ENGLISH BEAT,
YOU'LL HEAR A CERTAIN SIMILARITY AND FOR A GOOD REASON. BOB
SERGEANT PRODUCES BOTH BANDS RECORDS. HAIRCUT 100 DOES HAVE
A VERY CLEAN SOUND; TO CLEAN IT SEEMS FOR SOME NEW WAVERS.
LISTENING TO HAIRCUT 100's "PELICAN WEST" TAKES ME BACK
TO SUNNY SATURDAY AFTERNOONS AND SIGHTSEEING IN A TROPICAL
HAWAIIAN PARADISE.
HAIRCUT BEGAN ONE YEAR AGO IN A LIBRARY OF AN EATON
SQUARE "GENTLEMEN'S CLUB". SINCE THEN, THEY HAVE ACQUIRED A
TREMENDOUS FOLLOWING IN THE U.K. AND HAVE HAD TWO SINGLES
CLIMB HIGH ON BRITISH CHARTS. REVIEWS RAVE ABOUT THE BAND
WHOSE PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS "EXPRESSIONS OF
ECSTACY" AND "SUMMERY, STYLISH AND EXTRAVAGANTLY REPEATABLE."
IF I WERE TO DESCRIBE HAIRCUT 100's SOUND IN ONE WORD, IT
WOULD HAVE TO BE "UPLIFTING". YOU CAN'T LISTEN TO HAIRCUT AND
BE BUMMED-OUT AT THE SAME TIME. IT WOULD BE LIKE HAVING YOUR
CAKE AND EATING IT TOO!
THE MEMBERS OF HAIRCUT BECAME SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR WORK
WHEN BAD LUCK STRUCK. IN ONE WEEKS TIME, EACH OF THE GUYS
IN THE BAND WAS DROPPED BY THEIR GIRLFRIEND. MUSIC BECAME
THE MEDIUM THEY USED TO KEEP THEIR WHEELS TURNING.
HAIRCUT CHOSE THEIR NAME BECAUSE IT WAS BY FAR THE
SILLIEST THOUGHT OF AND SHORTLY AFTER THEIR LIBRARY DEBUT,
THEY WERE OFFERED STUDIO TIME BY KARL ADAMS, WHO WAS LATER
TO BECOME THEIR MANAGER. THAT DEMO TAPE EVENTUALLY WON THEM
A CONTRACT WITH ARISTA RECORDS IN THE FALL. BY THIS TIME,
HAIRCUT WAS COMPOSED OF FIVE MEMBERS: NICK HEYWARD, GRAHAM
JONES, LES NEMES, PHIL SMITH, BLAIR CUNNINGHAM AND MARK FOX.
NICK IS THE LEAD GUITARIST/VOCALIST , GRAHAM ALSO PLAYS
GUITAR, LES PLAYS BASS, BLAIR PLAYS DRUMS AND PHIL PLAYS
PERCUSIONS.
"PELICAN WEST" IS A VERY POLISHED POP LP AND AN OUT-
STANDING WORK CONSIDERING IT's HAIRCUT 100's FIRST ALBUM.
MY FAVORITE CUTS INCLUDE, "FAVORITE SHIRTS" (BOY MEETS GIRL),
"FANTASTIC DAY" AND "SURPRISE ME AGAIN". EVEN THE FINEST COMB
GARY NUMAN - "DANCE"
ATCO RECORDS
"DANCE" IS AMONG MY FAVORITE LISTENING ALBUMS. IRONICALLY,
THERE'S ONLY ONE DANCEABLE SONG ON "DANCE", NAMELY; "YOU ARE,
YOU ARE", WHICH IS A FAMILIAR NUMAN PHRASE. THIS MUSIC IS
EXTREMELY MELODIC AND MESMERIZING IN THAT UNIQUELY TWISTED
NUMAN STYLE. AFTER GETTING INTO THE MUSIC, THE LYRICS BEGAN
TO COME THROUGH. BEING A PART, I CAN REALLY APPRECIATE THESE
EXCERPTS: "SOMETIMES THEY TRY TO FORGET AND SOMETIMES THEY DO";
"WE'RE DREAMS IN COLD STORAGE, WE COULD DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY."
IN THE SONG, "MORAL", HE SAYS "THESE NEW ROMANTICS ARE ALL SO
BORING I COULD SWEAR I'VE BEEN THERE ONCE OR TWICE BEFORE",
AND ALSO, "JUST LIKE RELIGION YOU'RE GOING NOWHERE, LIKE YOUR
SO EXPLICIT CLOTHES ONTO THE FLOOR, ON THOSE OCCASIONS WHERE
EVERYTHING BROKE DOWN, INCLUDING YOU AND ME." ALREADY YOU CAN
HEAR THE CLASSIC NUMAN THEME: REJECTION AND THE UNENDING
MEMORY OF THE RESULTING TRAUMA. EVERY ALBUM NUMAN'S DONE DWELLS
ON THIS TOPIC FROM ONE ANGLE OR ANOTHER. HIS PREOCCUPATION WITH
DEATH AND HUMAN (EMOTIONAL) "WRECKAGE" HAVE TAKEN A BACK SEAT
TO ACCEPTANCE AND LOW-KEY SARCASM WHEN REMINISCING ABOUT THE
PAST. HOWEVER, HE IS STILL REFERRING TO THE PERSON SPOKEN TO
AS A CHEAP DECEITFUL, SELFISH WHORE "LIKE A VETERAN OF MEN FOR
CASH." OKAY, SO THE GUY IS A BIT ON THE STRANGE SIDE, STILL,
I BELIEVE THAT "DANCE" IS NUMAN's BEST WORK TO DATE. IT's NOT
NEARLY SO DEPRESSING AS "TELEKON" OR SOME OF HIS OTHER WORKS.
THE VARIETY OF SYNTHESIZERS USED ON "DANCE" IS LARGER
THAN ANY NUMAN ALBUM IN THE PAST. ROLAND JP4, PROPHET 5, ODYSSEY
AND CP30 ARE JUST A FEW OF THE INTRUMENTS USED TO PRODUCE THIS
ALBUM. WHAT IS EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE IS THE WAY NUMAN BLENDS THE
SOUNDS TOGETHER SO TAHT THEY FLOW SO GRACEFULLY FROM SONG TO
SONG. SIDE ONE STARTS MELLOW, DRIFTS AWAY SLOWLY AT THE END AND
IS GREAT RELAXATION MUSIC, WHILE SIDE TWO BEGINS FAIRLY LAID
BACK, THEN GRADUALLY BUILDS UP TO THE FAST-MORNING, CLIMACTIC,
"YOU ARE, YOU ARE", WHICH IS THE NEXT-TO LAST SONG. THEN FOLLOWS
"MORAL" AND APPROPRIATELY SO. IT STATES THE THEME OF THE ALBUM
AND LEAVES YOU IN A PEACEFUL STATE OF REFLECTION. IN ESSENCE,
YOU SHOULD PLAY SIDE ONE IF YOU'RE SLEEPING ALONE OR NOT IN THE
MOOD, AND PLAY SIDE TWO IF YOU WANT TO MAKE IT A NIGHT TO RE-
MEMBER. EITHER WAY, "DANCE" IS A SUPERB WORK OF ELECTRONIC ART
AND A MUST FOR EVERY WELL-ROUNDED ALBUM COLLECTION.__________

WATCH OUT FOR THIS GROUP! RCA IS HYPING SLOW CHILDREN
ON VARIETY NEW WAVE PROMO ALBUMS SUCH AS "BLITS’’. "SPRING .
IN FIALTA" IS THE CUT WHICH IS PLAYED MOST AND IS A QUICK
PACED, HIGH ENERGY, SOPHISTICATED DANCE TUNE. FIALTA WAS
A RESORT COMMUNITY IN RUSSIA WHICH NO LONGER EXISTS. THE
LYRICS ARE REMINISCENT OF IMAGIST POETRY WHICH WAS SO POP- ,
ULAR IN THE TWENTIES AND THIRTIES. PAT SHAZAR, THE LEAD
SINGER, HAS A VOICE LIKE A PRE-PUBESCENT TEENAGER WHOSE
PISSED OFF AT THE ADULT SOCIETY. HER TINY VOICE DOMINATES
THE MUSIC EFFECTIVELY IN ITS ALMOST SPOKEN STYLE. SHE AC-
TUALLY SOUNDS LIKE A KID SOMETIMES. MY FAVORITE CUTS IN-
CLUDE "PRESIDENT AM I", "SHE's LIKE AMERICA", "BRAZILLIAN
MAGAZINES" AND "SPRING IN FIALTA". ALL ARE WRITTEN BY
SHAZAR AND GUITARIST/VOCALIST ANDREW CHINICH. SLOW CHILD-
REN IS A MEMBER OF A NEW BREED OF WAVE MUSIC, SOMETIMES
REFERRED TO AS "NEW ROMANTICS". THE FACT THAT GROUPS LIKE
ROMEO VOID AND SOFT CELL ARE ATTAINING SUCCESS IS AN IN-
DICATION THAT THE PUBLIC IS READY FOR "SPRING IN FIALTA"
THE HISTORY IS HERE. THE CHILDREN ARE HERE. SO IS THE

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE HUMAN LEAGUE'S LATEST HIT "DON'T
YOU WANT ME", THEN YOU ARE NO FUN AT ALL! THIS IS A GREAT
SONG! DISCO, NEW WAVE, AND ROCK ANDROLL CROWDS KICK THEIR
HEELS UP TO THIS NUMBER! THIS EP CONTAINS TWO VERSIONS OF
