Baytown Rotary President Nick Woolery presents a
check to Robert E. Lee Interact Club President Chris
Garcia, which will be sent to the Rotary Foundation to
assist in efforts to eradicate polio globally. REL inter-
act raised $400 during their Purple Pinkie project and
Baytown Rotary will match that with another $600. That
$1,000 will be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation. Total polio cases worldwide were nearly cut
in half in 2017, with only 22 cases reported in two coun-
tries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

If you haven’t read a ghost story in a
while, M. Dressier has written a sophis-
ticated, literary tale for adults. Ellen
DeWight, a young real estate woman, is
eager to sell the old Lambry mansion to
a rich, demanding couple. When strange
incidents scare them away, she employs
Phillip Pratt to “cleanse” the mansion of
ghosts.
Emma Rose lived there as a house-
keeper a hundred years ago. Now she
haunts the house and scares away buyers
if she doesn’t approve of them. She tells
Dear Neil: We have two Texas
mountain laurels that have been in the
landscape for five years. They bloomed
the first year, but they haven’t bloomed
since. What can we do to get them to
flower?
That’s almost like proving the nega-
tive. There are many things that could
have kept them from flowering, in-
cluding cold winter weather, excessive
shade, too much rain, too much nitrogen

in fall when they should have been starting to set flower
buds, fall or winter pruning or any of many other possi-
ble reasons. The photos you attached look like perfectly
healthy plants. It’s been my experience with them in
my own landscape that some years are much better than
others. Sit tight. Perhaps this year will be a barnburner. I
hope so.
Dear Neil: Deer ate the bottom 3 to 4 feet of branches
off my cypress trees last year. I’ve fenced to stop any
further damage, but will the branches regrow?
Probably not. Conifers don’t have a ready supply of
dormant buds (called “adventitious” buds by botanists).
I’ve never seen them send out new shoots.
Dear Neil: Again this year, it looks like my daffodils
are going to produce only leaves - no flowers. They only
bloomed their first spring. What gives?
You almost assuredly chose a large-flowering vari-
ety such as King Alfred, Mount Hood, Unsurpassable,
etc. Even some of the smaller daffodils find our Texas
climate unsuitable to reblooming. Tulips and Dutch
hyacinths do the same thing. All of these plants will
produce foliage through the years, but they don’t flower
again. They need to be treated as annuals. It’s less likely,
but maybe possible that your daffodils are too crowded.
If you bought a type that should have rebloomed for you,
dig and divide the bulbs in late summer, and give them
another chance. Remember to leave their foliage in place
until it turns yellow, then brown each spring. The bulbs
need the foliage to store nutrients for the following year.
My bet is that you had the wrong variety for naturalizing
in Texas. A few of your best choices of the larger types
include Ice Follies, Carlton and Geranium.
Dear Neil: We have this growth on the bark of our
live oaks and some of our crape myrtles. Should we treat
it, and if so, with what?
These are lichens. They’re a symbiotic growth
consisting of algae and certain species of funguses that
nourish one another. They are epiphytes, meaning that
they use the trees’ branches and trunks for support but
not for nourishment. While they usually appear on weak-
er trees with thinning canopies, they do not cause the
problems. In fact, your best recourse is not to apply fun-
gicides to the trunks, but instead to apply nitrogen to the
soil and to keep the plants watered thoroughly. That will
encourage thicker canopies, which in turn will thicken
up the top growth and cut off sunlight to the lichens.
That should help the appearance of the trunks. But in the
meantime, they’re pretty much a non-problem.

THE SPRING SHOP™
how determined she is to get rid the ghost hunter who
has had success in the area, but at this house there is
more resistance.
As a reader you will keep turning the pages, but with-
out any hope of predicting what happens next. Emma
Rose has lived there so long, it is her home and you will
find yourself on the side of the ghost and her tricks. She
takes the ghost hunter on a game of cat and mouse.
Phillip’s “cleansing” devices are not working as he
anticipated, but Emma Rose is no pushover ghost. She
doesn’t plan on leaving. We read about her life in the
past as a nineteen-year-old servant in the gracious Lamb-
ry House. Mrs. Lambry’s considers it inappropriate that
her son is quite taken with the pretty maid.
She sends Emma Rose out to the Point to work for the
lighthouse keepers. Quint Lambry finds a way to contin-
ue to “walk out” with his sweetheart.
Meanwhile back to the present at the stately man-
sion, Phillip and Ellen keep trying to find out which old
building the obnoxious ghost inhabits. They suspect it is
the decrepit old tower. Manoel, the gardener falls and is
killed. Phillip recognizes the ghost has been instrumental
in the accident. He becomes even more intent on getting
rid of the “haint.”
In the small logging town in northern California,
ghosts are causing mischief for the townspeople. When
Phillip gets a court order to exhume the bodies of the
Lambry family, secrets are revealed. Emma Rose tries to
control her anger.
She thinks that it weakens her powers and causes her
to act out in ghostly behavior. She takes her revenge be-
cause no one remembers her hardworking life. Actually
there is no one left to remember so what does she have
to lose.
As the ghost tells the story, you will see it different
from most ghost stories. You find yourself looking for
clues in the people you meet, wondering who they might
have been in their previous life
