Deanna Gomez also earned her
dinner, working five innings and giv-
ing up four hits and an earned run
with one walk to pick up the win.
Maritza Medrano also had a strong
day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a
triple and two RBIs. Lizeth Hernan-
dez was 1 for 2 and an RBI.
The Lady Patriot bats came out on
fire against Pasadena Dobie, jumping
out to a 4-0 run. The Lady Longhorns
answered with six runs and escaped a
bases loaded situation with just one
out to pick up an 11-4 win.

runners on. A wild pitch advanced
the runners and Dobie decided the
best option was to walk Mohler and
load the bases with no outs. Mo-
ments later, Hernandez drilled a two-
run double.
Hailey Thorndyke got the start for
GCM and lasted an inning, giving
up six runs, only two of which were
earned on five hits and three walks.
Mohler worked one inning and gave
up five runs, two earned, on a hit and
six walks.
GCM hurt itself with runners in
scoring position. The Lady Patriots
were only 1 for 5 with bases loaded,
preventing some crooked numbers
from showing up on the scoreboard.

Despite being ready to go, it was
Caney Creek who scored first. With
30:36 left in the first half, Lee tied
the score. Marissa Lugo won the
ball at midfield and beat the defense
down the sideline. She went with
her left foot opposite comer over
the keeper’s head for the score. With
11:51 left in the half, Lee took a 2-1
lead. Garza had the ball on the right
side and found the net on the oppo-
site corner.
It was Caney Creek that went in
with momentum with a tying score
with 1:13 left in the half.
In the second half, Caney Creek
put the pressure on Lee with pos-
session. Shots were few and far
between for the Lady Ganders who
struggled to get the ball out of the
zone. Annelysse Lopez stood firm
under the pressure with help from
the defenders, who turned back a
number of attacks.
The Panthers finally broke through
“All the way up to this morning,
we played with great energy and
resolve. We competed. Today, we
didn’t do that.”
Galveston Ball took a 2-0 lead
in the second inning and held the
Rangers bats in check through-
out most of the game. Despite not
having his best stuff, Cameron
Crenshaw kept the Rangers in the
game. He also got some nice plays
from his defense. Justin Gonza-
lez made a standout play in cen-
ter field, charging a line drive and
making the catch.
Crenshaw gave way to Aaron
Brasher with two runners on in the
sixth inning. Those runners scored
and Crenshaw finished with four
runs, three earned on six hits with
six strikeouts.
The Rangers began their rally in
the sixth, down 2-0 with one out.
Gonzalez led off with a single and
Brasher reached on a bunt. Cesar
Prieto was hit by a pitch to load
the bases for Brandon Russell,
who drew a walk to bring in a run.
Sterling added runs on an error
and single by Fabian Teran to take
a 3-2 lead.
The Rangers save the lead back
It will go down as a tie, but giving
the reaction of the Lee and Caney
Creek girls as they walked off the
field, it felt like a win for the Lady
Ganders.
Klarissa Garza headed in kick by
Suleima Espinoza with 2:02 left in
the match to lift the Lady Ganders
to a 3-3 tie. Caney Creek had tak-
en the lead with 12:14 left in the
half after dominating possession. A
loss would have sunk Lee’s playoff
hopes. Instead, they still hold on to
hope.
“It was huge,” Lee head coach
Jason Riffe said of the comeback.
“We have only done that one other
time and it was against South Hous-
ton. The effort and attitude was bet-
ter. We emphasized team goals this
week and they were ready to go.
They were hungry.”
Scouting reports for Goose Creek
Memorial softball probably consist
of a big red circle with a line drawn
through it. Inside the circle is a pic-
ture of Cheyenne Mohler and the
message should be pretty clear.
Pitch to her at your own risk.
Mohler drilled her fifth home
run of the season in the fifth inning
against Porter Friday morning to
help left GCM to a 5-1 win in the
GCM-Sterling Tournament. The
tournament was the final warm-up
for District 21-6A play, which starts
Tuesday. Mohler finished the day 2
for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Lady

with a goal at the 11:35 mark. Es-
pionoza made a great save and the
ball went out for a Caney Creek free
kick. The Panthers scored off the re-
bound to take the lead.
Lee picked up the pace and had
some opportunities. The Caney
Creek goalkeeper barely got a hand
on a Lugo shot to keep the lead
intact. But it did not last. Lee was
awarded a free kick from the left
side with just over two minutes left
and made it count. Espinoza got the
ball in the air and Garza used her
head to get the equalizer and give
Lee the tie.
“We felt like we gave up two goals
that should not have happened,”
Riffe said. “We weren’t making
smart decisions in the second half.
We turned it over and had some in-
juries which made us move some
people around.”
Lee will be back in action Friday
when it travels to New Caney.

MONT BELVIEU — At times,
the Friday morning game between
Sterling and Galveston Ball felt
like a basketball game. There were
four lead changes in the last two
innings. Unfortunately for the
Rangers, Ball scored last, ruining
a comeback effort in a 6-5 final in
the Barbers Hill Round Robin.
Sterling took a 5-4 lead into the
bottom of the seventh, scoring five
runs in two innings after failing to
get a hit going into the sixth in-
ning. The Tornadoes stonned back
and earned the walk-off after a
groundball got through a pulled-in
infield.
“That’s just baseball karma,"
Sterling head coach Adam Shibley
said. “You don’t deserve the game
and a lot of times you don’t win
the same.

Although Friday night’s
2-2 stalemate with King-
wood didn’t hurt Goose
Creek Memorial in the
District 21-6A boys soccer
standings, judging by the
somber looks on the fac-
es of the Patriots after the
match, the results didn’t sit
too well.
“We dominated the
match and felt like we de-
served the win,” said GCM
head coach William Free-
man. "When you do that
but you don’t get it, you
feel cheated.”
The Patriots and Mus-
tangs entered the match
third and fourth in the dis-
trict, respectively, and the
standings remained un-
changed with the tie.
“Basically, there are four
teams (GCM, Kingwood,
Atascocita, C.E. King)
fighting for two playoff
spots,” Freeman said. “We
still have matches left with
King and Atascocita so
we’re in control of our own
fate.”
The Patriots received two
goals from Michael Murillo
in the match. The first came
with 35:24 remaining in the
first half for a 1 -0 lead, and
the second goal came at the
25:12 point in the second
half. On that goal, Murillo
broke free down the left
side and then launched the
ball over the Kingwood
keeper’s head and into the
net.
Kingwood’s goals came
on a long blast from outside
the box midway through
the first half, that just got
over the outstretched arm
of GCM keeper Adalid
Trevino, and on a penal-
ty kick early in the second
half. The penalty kick was
awarded when the Patriots
were guilty of a hand ball in
the box.
The Patriots had several
