Fry Street's fate under debate
Students, activists rally
against redevelopment

While shops, restaurants and
pubs await their fate, fans of the
funky Fry Street strip unite for
one cause: saving the old Fry
Street.
Buster Freedman, president of
United Equities Inc., a real estate
firm based in Houston, recently
bought the property from Den-
ton attorney Curtis Loveless.
With the exception of the Cork
Screw, the Campus Barber Shop,
half of Cool Beans and an old
service station, the purchase in-
cluded a block of establishments
inside the bordering streets of
Fry, Hickory, Oak and Welch,
according to preliminary plans
submitted to the city of Denton.
Freedman wants to redevelop
the area to attract commercial
corporations such as Starbucks.
After repeated phone calls,
both Loveless and Freedman
were unavailable for comment.
When Lori Shelton, Denton's
city planner, spoke with United
Equities Inc. about a month ago,
the firm's representatives told her
they would be submitting a final
plan to the city in a month.
Shelton still has not seen it,
she said.
For now nothing is finalized,
not even the time of actual re-
construction, Shelton said.
During the first public Fry
Street meeting at Denton's Cen-
tral Fire Station on Thursday,
June 1, a group of 12 commu-
nity activists spoke with several
concerned people about ways to
halt redevelopment plans.
Attendees included students
and NT alumni looking to retain
their present and former places
of social recreation; members of
NT's Greenpeace organization;
two Denton City Council mem-
bers and various other members
of the community.
The 12 activists included Chris
Flemmons, a member of Den-
ton band The Baptist Generals,
and Martin lies, archivist for
centraldentonpreservation.org,
a Web site they created. Raven
Oak, NT alumnus and creator of
savefrystreet.com, also helped
lead the meeting.
According to the Web site,
the main goals of www.save-
frystreet.com are to declare Fry
Street buildings historical, al-
low current businesses to stay
in their space and improve the
current buildings along Fry and
Hickory Streets.
Jon Black, an Austin-based
consultant, encouraged letter-
writing at the meeting.
"One hand-written letter car-
ries more weight than 10 signa-
tures on a petition," Black said.
