D enton s all rolled up
Sushi bar offers
tasty selections

Each roll is precise. Crab meat,
avocado and cucumber fill a sea-
weed covered creation topped off by
a creative placement of rice. A touch
of wasabi to throw taste buds out of
whack is dabbed on top. After being
smothered in soy sauce, the scrump-
tious Japanese California roll can
be devoured off of skinny wooden
chopsticks.
Since its opening in March, Den-
ton has been rolled up by Avocado:
California Roll and Sushi Bar, lo-
cated off Interstate Highway 35.
Hidden away by the chaos of Loop
288, the restaurant consumes suite
126 just west of the highway on the
loop.
At first glance, the upbeat colors
and décor allow a warm welcome
to both sushi lovers and first tim-
ers. Lime green and crayola orange
paint fill the walls. A Friday night at
Avocado was not particularly busy,
so waiting for a table should not be a
problem. Yet, it might be important
to keep in mind that the tables are
unusually tiny for the many separate
plates of food you are looking for-
ward to experiencing.
The waitress was a sweetheart.
She was patient and answered any
question that arose. Water and iced
tea filled colorful glasses that are
sure to make you smile. The or-
ange, blue and green cups accented
the dining area.

pictures and descriptions of all the
different rolls and sushi made or-
dering a breeze - that is, if you can
narrow down the choices. Avocado
has 50 different rolls, five types of
sushi and four types of sashimi,
another type of raw fish, to choose
from. Whether you're a sushi lover
or a first timer excited to try some-
thing new, there is something for
everyone.
Hawaiian rolls, a personal favor-
ite, are similar to California rolls, but
these yummy treats are topped off
with either tuna or yellowtail fish.
Sea World rolls are very similar, but
they put a few rolls that are topped
off with shrimp into the mix, a great
pick as well. Some other rolls on the
menu include crunch rolls topped
off with American cheese, French
Kiss rolls with spicy crab meat and
fried salmon and a New York roll
with fried shrimp. The rolls can get
a bit pricey, ranging from $7 to $15
depending on the type of fish.
Shrimp and salmon sushi are a
tasty choice as well. Both are served
with a gorgeous and unique presen-
tation. Sushi ranges from $5 to $9.
The sushi chef, who made it a point
to greet all the customers person-
ally, mentioned that the salmon is
extra delicious because it is fresh,
unlike most other eateries. Not only

This Beverly Hills roll was carefully prepared and beautifully presented by
Steve Lee, the sushi chef at Avocado: California Roll and Sushi Bar. The roll
is made from fried soft-shell crab, crab meat, avocado, tuna and salmon.
is the chef talented, but he is warm
and personable.
For the newcomers who have
not yet lost their sushi virginity, do
not be afraid to try somethi ng new.
Break outside of the box. Try simple
rolls such as a California roll or a
vegetable roll with only vegetables,
avocado and cucumber to make sure
you like the Japanese cuisine before
you break off into the diverse pos-
sibilities of raw fish. The creations
served at Avocado are exceptionally
delicious. It is a good place to begin
many years of sushi and soy sauce
dipping that will follow a first ex-
perience.
Finding both tasty and well-pre-
sented sushi in a clean and color-
ful environment seemed close to
impossible in Denton, but Avocado
changed that.
