Reggae band still jams
after ten years
ByKrisPatton
Contributing Writer
For more than a decade, Slightly
Stoopid, the native Southern
California band that was origi-
nally discoveredby the late Sublime
frontman Bradley Nowell, has
mesmerized listeners with their
unique style of melodic tunes. Their
sound is a compilation of rock,
folk, hip-hop, alternative, reggae
and acoustic with a wide variety of
instrumentáis. Their latest album
Chronchitis was released in early
August, and is their most evolved
and musically mature album to
date.
Slightly Stoopid has found a
way to capture everyday life and
deliver it to an audience in a type
of Caribbean poetry that leaves one
wanting to hear more even after
the music has subsided. Songs
like "2am," "Baby I Like It" and
"Digital" bring us into the world of
earthly pleasures. "Hold On to the
One," "Nobody Knows" and "Girl
U So Fine" remind us that life isn't
complete until we find someone
to spend it with. These are only a
few of the songs and themes that
Chronchitis covers. There are still
many more with so much life sewn
into them that, when listening, one
can't help but think the words,
"wow, you got that right."
Architecturally, this album is
brilliant. The songs alternate not
only in themes, but styles as well.
At one moment the sound of an
acoustic guitar with rock and folk
influenced vocals will be filling the
air and at the next, a track comes
and presents a blend of instrumen-
táis and reggae. Even better, the
entire album seems well thought
out; the band puts effort put into
each song. There is no part of it that
leaves listeners wondering if the
production was rushed or if songs
were added just to fill the space.
Thankfully there is no sign of
this band slowing down. With the
addition of a new horn section
comprised of C-Money and Dela,
Slightly Stoopid has now taken on
a more complete sound.

Chronchitis is an album that is
nothing short of epic. The band
has taken influences from so many
great styles of music and created
something that is just stupidly
good.
As if Slightly Stoopid didn't
deliver enough diversity, the
album also features the musical
talents from the likes of G. Love,
Guru of Gang Star, Angelo Moore
of Fishbone and the Beastie Boys'
keyboardist Money Mark.
Slightly Stoopid has continued
with their approach to creating
music that sounds as good live as
it does in the studio. With that in
mind, lookforward to their Summer
Haze Tour, which will feature G.
Love & Special Sauce, set to reach
Dallas in early November.
