UNT students.
am eager to start the 2008-09 academic year, and I wish each of you the very best as we begin
this year together.
As president, I have had many opportunities during the past two years to spend time with talented
students like you and to see how you are discovering the power of ideas each and every day at
our student-centered public research university. It is exciting to hear about your experiences
and see you engaged as learners and researchers in UNT classrooms and laboratories and with
our greater campus community.
Being on campus with you constantly reminds me that UNT truly is an amazing university with a
legacy of excellence that grows every year. And I know that UNT takes pride in its outstanding faculty,
high academic standards, research and creative activities, and diverse, talented student body.
I know that you, too, take pride in our campus, and I hope you celebrate your time here.
As you settle into the year, you should be sure to enjoy your experiences and take advantage of
everything our university offers. UNT provides you with a campus that is rich with opportunity for exploration and development, and I
encourage each of you to get involved. There are about 300 organizations on campus that offer ample opportunity for you to grow in any
way you desire. Take advantage of our first-class Pohl Recreation Center, the services available at Chestnut Hall (Career Center,
Counseling and Testing Services, and the Student Money Management Center), our movie theater and our array of other activities
designed for you.
This fall, we launch our One Book, One Community reading program, which we hope will bring our UNT community together with Denton
and the surrounding communities to discuss American identity and immigration. The annual yearlong reading and discussion program
focuses activities on a chosen theme and a book that reflects that theme. Our inaugural year will feature Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean
Trees and the theme of "American Identity in an Age of Immigration: Beyond the Melting Pot." I encourage you to read the book and
participate in the discussions and activities that will take place across campus and in Denton throughout the year.
And mark your calendar now with the many university events and activities planned for this fall. I hope you will join me Oct. 28 or 29 for
Really, Let's Talk, a forum that gives you an opportunity to share what's on your mind directly with me and lets us have an open dialogue.
The Mean Green will begin the football season Aug. 30 at Kansas State, and I'll see you at our first home game Sept. 6 against Tulsa.
At Homecoming Oct. 25, we will celebrate our Mean Green nation and enjoy a parade that features floats made of recycled materials.
And don't forget the numerous opportunities you have to hear our exceptional music students perform, attend a production by the
Department of Dance and Theatre or visit the art exhibitions in our galleries.
But remember that being a UNT student is primarily about the extraordinary academic experiences available to you. So study hard, excel
in your classes, search for new knowledge and ideas and don't overlook the many opportunities for enlightened debate. A strong under-
graduate education will prepare you for your pursuit of professional or graduate school should you desire or ensure that you are equipped
with the best tools possible for pursuing your career, while remaining a lifelong learner. Preparing you for your future as an engaged,
thoughtful citizen of our world is something I am truly passionate about.
This fall, we welcome our second class of Emerald Eagle Scholars, academically talented freshmen who have high financial needs, along
with all of our new freshman students. I ask each of our returning students to warmly welcome our newest class of Eagles.
Our thriving university continues to gain momentum and is reaching new heights of excellence every day. We are becoming recognized as
a student-centered public research university that is truly centered on learning. Our Honors College and our Texas Academy of Mathe-
matics and Science mark our ongoing commitment to a strong focus on the undergraduate experience. The Princeton Review also has
named us one of the best regional colleges in the West — a listing earned through our academic excellence and from surveys of students
like you. At UNT, learning is exemplified by research opportunities for students — both undergraduate and graduate students.
My UNT Pride grows deeper every day, and I encourage each of you to continue growing your pride in UNT.
this coming year with you.
look forward to spending
With green pride,
Gretchen M. Bataille
