Staff members of the Kermit
High School 1948-49 annual, The
Sand Storm, and sponsors went to
San Angelo Saturday to confer
with the publishers of the annual.
The group not only received in-
aide knowledge of the mechanics
in publishing but had discussion
with other school groups on annual
publication problems.
Gerald L. McGuire, principal of
Kermit High School, said prospects
were good for the most outstand-
ing annual this year in the history
of the school.
Making the trip were: Frances
Myers, editor; Ethel Faye Mitch-
ell, business manager; Geraldine
Hudnall, art editor; Joan Barnes,
copywriter; Mrs. Clyde Martin,
sponsor; and McGuire.

Q. How long will registrant have
in which to make an appeal?
A. He will have 10 days within
which to appeal from any determ-
ination by a local board, except
that he cannot appeal from a
medical determination. The filing
of an appeal will not operate to
delay the armed forces physical
examination. On the contrary,
registrant will be required to have
an armed forces physical examina-
tion before the case is forwarded
to an appeal board.

Miss Jonnie Douthitt of Phoenix,
Ariz., and her trained horse, Star
Baby, presented a program for
students of Kermit Elementary
School, parents and pre-school
children in the High School audi-
torium, Wednesday, Oct. 6, O. M.
Stewart, principal, announced.
Believed to be the first time
that a horse ever appeared on the
stage of the local auditorium,
Star Baby thrilled the youngsters
with unusual acts.
Billed as “the horse with human
intelligence,” Star Baby performed
such tricks as ringing a bell, un-
tying knots, carrying a hat, en-
acting “the end of the trail,” and
reading numbers.
A special act was Star Baby
working with Miss Douthitt in
pantomime of a love story. In this
act, boy meets girl, they shake
hands, boy tips hat, they talk for
a while in whispers, go around
together in a 3-way pivot, finally
they march down the aisle side
by side, kneel at altar. After the
wedding ceremony, Star Baby
kisses his bride, hugs her and takes
her handkerchief and waves good-
bye.

A complete and varied schedule
of assmbly programs for Kermit
Elementary School have been
planned for the current school
year, according to O. M. Stewart,
principal.
The program will be held each
T’hursday in the High School audi-
torium. Since all of the students
cannot be seated at one time in
the auditorium, the intermediates
—grades 4, 5 and 6—will have a
program one Thursday and the
primary—grades 1, 2 and 3—the
next, Stewart said.
Out-of-town as well as talented
local speakers and musical num-
bers will highlight the programs.
The public is invited.
Q. If the classification of a man
is not possible on the basis of his
questionnaire alone, just what will
further procedure be?
A. In such cases as this, the
registrant will be called before his
local board for personal inquiry.
All additional information secured
in this manner must be reduced
to writing.
Q. How will the registrant know
how he has been classified?
A. The local board will notify
him of his classification on the
date on which it is done.
Q. Will boards order a physical
examination of registrants?
A. Within the full and usually
accepted meaning of the term,
there will be no physical examina-

‘ tions conducted by or at local
Iboards. The armed forces will con-
duct physical examinations for in-
ductees which generally will be
final for purposes of the Selective
Service Act.
Q. What if a registrant claims in
his questionnaire that he has a
mental or physical defect which he
believes would be disqualifying?
A. In that case, he will be or-
dered to appear before the medical
adviser to the local board for in-
terview. This medical adviser is
appointed by the President on ad-
vice of the governor. After the in-
terview, the medical adviser will
recommend for or against sending
the registrant for final examina-
tion by the armed forces.
Q. Can the registrant appeal
from the action of a local board?
A. Yes. If the registarnt is not
satisfied with the classification he

CAMERA SPOTS FIRE.—This farm house, which would
have been in the flood storage area after the Whitney Dam
is completed, was completely destroyed by the flames which
engulf it. No one was injured. This picture was taken by com-
mercial photographer Jimmie Willis, who spotted the fire
near Whitney, Texas, while taking air views of Central Texas
