when I tried to instill good every

thought they already knew how to

First I had to convince them that,
yes, they did need a few instructions.

Political flea powder
Since 2017 I’ve often read the politically oriented
opinion letters in the Sun. As a fonner (emphasis on
fonner) Reagan Republican, I am appalled at the vitriol
that I read. Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican,
no one could appraise our current political milieu as a
healthy one. Hurling insults at each other is not going to
accomplish much in the long run.
I’ve noticed one interesting datum in all these letters:
The vast majority are men. Hardly any women are joining
in the political food-fight. Why? As a man, it makes me
wonder: Is it the increase in testosterone or the decrease
in civility? The irony is that, more than likely, all of these
men would be back-slapping buddies if they were having
a beer while watching the Super Bowl at the local pub.
What is it about religion and politics that brings out the
worst in us? Aren’t we all Americans first?
Of course we all have different opinions, and, more-
over, we all fall victim to confinnation bias - that natural
tendency only to accept evidence that confirms to what
we already believe. It seems to me that that is exactly
what is going on here. Few writers’ responses contain real
facts, only innuendo and ad hominem attacks on politi-
cians they don’t like. In a court of law, all of them would
be adjudged “hearsay” - not admissible evidence.
When I was a youth, my parents told me not to hang out
with unsavory people, and I’ve tried to live by that dictum
ever since. As the adage goes, “If you lie down with dogs,
you’ll get up with fleas.” I also judge other people, such
as politicians, by whom they surround themselves. You
can judge for yourself where that might apply to your fa-
vored candidate or officeholder. If we should start itching
for no apparent reason, maybe we should douse ourselves
with some political flea powder.
The Nurture Nature Festival re-
turns to the Baytown Nature Cen-
ter this weekend, and the Easter
Bunny hops into both Baytown and
Mont Belvieu for a visit. For those
who prefer indoor destinations, the
weekend selections include a jazz
concert, a craft show and activities
at the Art League.
The biggest event on the calendar
for the weekend is the Nurture Na-
ture Festival at the Baytown Nature
Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat-
urday.

Ashamed of Democrats
While Mr. Butcher is entitled to his opinions, he’s not
entitled to his own facts. Democrats under Kennedy and
Johnson did not support the Civil Rights Act. In fact, the
1964 Civil Rights Act was passed almost entirely by Re-
publicans, with 74% of Democrats voting against it. The
southern Democrats, known as the Dixie Democrats, in-
cluded such honorable members as Alabama governor
George (never integrate the south) Wallace and fonner
KKK Klansman Sen. Robert Byrd.
Like Mr. Carlisle, I too question the credibility of “fact
checkers” who often are merely liberal journalists further-
ing their agenda. Opinions and hyperbole are labeled “lies”
and actual facts are often ignored so the fact checker can
make their point.
Regarding Mr. Butcher’s opinion on abortion, the over-
whelming majority of doctors will tell you abortion is nev-
er the prescribed treatment for any health condition of the
mother or child. Premature birth, maybe. So, don’t tell me
abortion is about a woman’s right to choose. She already
made her choice when she decided to have unprotected
sex. (Granted, it’s not always a choice.) So what she’s real-
ly choosing at this point is who will suffer the consequenc-
es of her choice, and conveniently she’s choosing some-
one who can’t protest or stand up for their right not to be
murdered. Yes, I do realize abortion is a very emotionally
fraught decision, but my opinion is that it’s murder and sci-
ence says it’s not medical.
I know Mr. Butcher suffers from Trump Derangement
Syndrome and I’m sorry they aren’t yet close to a cure.
Perhaps you’ll feel better if you read the genius of AOC or
wallow in the hypocrisy of Bernie Sanders, a millionaire
lecturing us on income inequality. Maybe you’ll feel better
attending a White Privilege seminar hosted by Elizabeth
Warren or just plain Privilege hosted by Hillary Clinton
and Jussie Smollett. I might also suggest learning about
truthfulness from Kamala Harris, who “grooved” on Snoop
and Tupac a decade before they released any music.
Seriously though, I’m ashamed of the Democrats. They
are incapable of holding serious discussions on anything.
So, until Democrats decide that doing their jobs is more im-
portant than scoring political points or resisting everything
Trump, our country will continue to suffer divisiveness and
delays in addressing the safety, security and freedom every
American wants. And that’s just how I see it.

Informed by leftist lies
In reply to Garry Van Trease — it is without a doubt
you are infected deeply with Trump Derangement Syn-
drome with hate spewing out of both ears. As with many
left-wing biased members of our media, you like to twist
things to your own liking and not follow what has been
written.
Only one small sentence was wrote about President
Trump yet you evolved it into a mass of an unbelievable
tirade. For example, your ignorance of the barbaric in-
fanticide that many states have adopted shows us you are
very ill informed. Being a Democrat, you condone this,
please search and see what is going on in this country
before opening your mouth in ignorance.
But, Mr. Trease seems to be very well informed by
the lefts lies and misinformation that has ingrained itself
within him. Maybe Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, your par-
ty’s new leader, will help in spreading more filth on our
nation.
As far as being a Christian, I can tell that you at one
time might have been close to being one. Your recent
thoughts as you’ve put down on paper tell otherwise.
Nuff’ said. There is a famous Proverb that tells us this
but I feel it is just a waste of time and typing to explain it
to you. I suggest you contact CNN in order to be one of
their star journalists.
