.TO INDUCE IMMIGRATION.
A St. Louis passenger agent has
devised a novel clan to continue
immigration promotion in the
Southwest.
The extensive colonization sys
tern employed by immigration
aeents will no longer be available
after January 1 when the railroad
rate law becomes effective. In
consequence of immigration agents
work never having been declared a
regular function of railway busi.
ness operation but looked upon as
a side issue the entire promotion
oi immigration ceases for want of
means to oush it namely free
transportation.
Under the proposed plan imml
Grants who have settled in the
southwest will be asked to send
letters to their original homes in
foreign countries. These com
munications will be descriptive of
the advantages enjoyed by" the
southwest.
That the plan may be simplified
for the settlers the letters'and cir
cular matter will be prepared
under ' date1 of each town by the
'advertising bureau of the railways
They will treat' in an" attractive
ananner of the opportunities' "for
inien 'of Industry wB'6' 'want to
iound homes for their families.
Conditions of the climate what
the soil prddiices in proportion to
'the effort put forth cost of living
and other Betails important to the
immigrant will be prepared in an
intelligent way so that it may be
easily comprehended.
That portion of southwestern
settlers derived from the tide of
immigration will be reached through
addresses in possession of the pres-
ent land and immigration agents
and through the station agentss of
railways. The plan will be watched
with much interest since it gives
promise of accomplishing results
equally as important as those secur
ed under the system about to be
abrogated. It may be pronounced
successful if it yields half the
results.
Only a few weeks ago we had
the extreme pleasure of announc-
ing the debut of the Kingsville
Herald under the auspices of Ben
Harris than whom Texas has not
produced a better newspaper man
nor one who has done more . good
hard work in that field. Today
we have to report with an amount
of sorrow equal to our former
pleasure the death of Ben. He
was a good newspaper man a good
fellow and a good citizen. In his
death the newspaper fraternity
loses a good member and every
one who knew Ben loses a friend.
FrBEzing weather with frost
or sleet was experienced recently
in 'Sputa Texas as for south as
Victoria and points along the same
latitude. At fair Brownsville on
the lower River Grande so far only
slightly cool weather has been
experienced with rain enough to
"put a good season into the
ground."
.With Mr. Roosevelt absolutely
declining v rertomiuation the re-
publicans are said to be at a loss for
a suitable candidate. While the
nresident himself and some of his
nearest supporters are openly in
favor of tariff revision the most
probable candidates for the nomina-
tion are distinctly of the "stand
oat" variety of republicans. At
the same time the president and
his policies are so immensely
popular with the rank and file of
his party that it is hardly likely
that any of his probable successors
for leadership differing so greatly
from him on various important
questions as vtbey do at present
will arouse much enthusiasm among
the voters. In fact the main
strength of the republican party
with Roosevelt out of the running
undoubtedly lies chiefly in the
weakness "and disorganization of
the democrats. Were the latter
effectively organized with a strong
and popular leader at their head
they would stand the best possible
chance of carrying the next elec
tion. -
LOCAL AND PERSONAL
Lost between the postoffice and
J. J. Cocke's residence a smal
silver flask. Finder will receive
reward on returning same to Mr
Cocke.
Tomatoes" egg plants andsquash
are contributions which the cele
brated Blalack farm has been
shipping to distant markets by ex
press for some time past.
Nineteen varieties of fresh vege
tables were counted on sale at the
the city market this morning by
one of our observant citizens
And all of these vegetables were
grown right arouud Brownsville
too.
This is glorious weather for
Christmas shopping. The clear
bright sunshine and the cool
bracing air of the lower Rio Grande
today make it a pleasure to be out
of doors and a hardship to have to
stay in.
Parties arriving by last night's
train report that the freeze ot
Monday and Tuesday did not reach
as far south as Corpus Chnsti
the temperature there not falling
lower than 36 degrees. Vegeta-
tion around that place and all
along the. Brownsville road to this
place escaped any injury whatever
from the cold.

scene ot so mucn pleasure tor
manyof our people Jast season
will soon be a thing of the past
and the echoes of Riverside Park
will ring no more with the busy
whir of the roller skate or the
merry laugh of the skaters. The

Not a National Disease.
The common statement that
dyspepsia is the national disease
has nothing to sustain it says the
Philadelphia Ledger. Tn the aver-
age collection of people about a
table men and women will be ob
served to be eating what pleases
them. They do this without sign
of pain or even discomfort. Here
and there is the dyspeptic devoted
much to the pampering of a
stomach made poor not through
indulgence in ordinary wholesome
bods but from eating too much
or too little or at irregularintervals.
He is welcome to all the pamper
ing that may be necessary but it is
fair that he dismiss the notion that;
the collective stomachs of a gen-
eration are his especial care. .

Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con
dition of the mucous lining of the Eus-
tachian Tube. When this tube is inflam-
ed you have a rumbling sound or imper
fect hearing and when it is entirely clos
ed Deafness is the result and unless the
inflammation can be taken out and this
tube restored to its normal condition
hearing will be destroyed forever; nine
cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh
which is nothing but an inflamed condi-
tion of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh)
that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh
