Judge Bob Carroll addresses members of the Maypearl Lions Club early
Tuesday morning during their regular monthly meeting. He told the Club
about CASA - court-appointed special advocates, specially-trained volun-
teers who advocate for children caught up in CPS (Child Protective
Services) suits in his court. In incidents of children being removed from
their homes for their own protection, the CASA can learn what is best for the
children and recommend a placement to the judge. Photo by A. Mooney
Members of the Maypearl Lions Club met early Tuesday morning at the
Service Club. The meeting date was a change from their typical “first
Saturday” meeting. After a breakfast of biscuits and donuts from Donuts
and Deli, a large group of Lions heard from Judge Bob Carroll about CASA.
CASA is an acronym for ‘court-appointed special advocate.’ The CASA of
Ellis County is a non-profit organization of volunteers who are specially
trained to be advocates of children who are removed from their homes in sit-
uations where neglect or abuse is discovered by Child Protective Services.
CASA is a nation-wide program that started several years ago in the
Pacific Northwest and has been in the Ellis county court system for only a
, couple of years. Accompanying Judge Carroll were volunteer coordinator
Missy Mease and Director Rhodie Rawls who also informed Maypearl
Lions about the details of volunteering to be a CASA.
Carroll told members that the CASA works for the children in a court
case and assists the court in determining which extended family members,
for example, would be the best placement for children in a situation where
children had to be removed from their home due to neglect or abuse. CASA
volunteers are always in demand because of the great number of child abuse
and neglect cases and the overwhelmed Child Protective Services agency
that deals with them.
The Lions are planning a special event on Saturday May 27 when
KBEC-AM will remotely broadcast from 8 am to 10 am from Main Street .
The Lions will be selling concessions and raffle tickets that day for a John
Deere lawn tractor. The raffle serves as a fund raiser for various Lions club
