Thk old aying about fools and
their money being soon parted is
exemplified orer and oyer again.
A Score Settled.
It vraa at a reception the other
afternoon and it was still so 'early
and the comers so few that conver-
sation was possible. They met the
two women who have hated and
kissed each other these two years.
"Yes" said one 'I've been so busy
all week sewing you know for
my little girl." "You're so indus-
trious -my dear" said the other
"and so ambitious to attempt so
much. I'm sure I shouldn't dare
I sew so badly." "Oh! I'm sure you
underrate your skill" returned the
one with :: : mile like a rapier thrust.
"I'm sure that gown you have on
looks very well indeed." And every
one within earshot knew that a
score had been settled. . -
Such Is Life.
"It doesn't seem altogether fair"
observes the man with the intro-
spective eves.
"What doesn't ?" a;ks the man
with the discouraged whiskers.
"There's old man Meddergras
son Samuel. Re wouldn't stay on
the farm and become a tiller of the
soil like his father. Ran away from
home and studied art then came
back and painted sorr.c views of
the old farm. And he got 150
for a picture of a fie'd that his
father would be glad to sell for a
five pound note." London An-

Going "Out" to Dinner.
A Philadelphia business man had
as guest a friend from Toledo an ex
tremely busy individual little la- j
miliar with the social graces. For
the first evening of his stay a dinner .
party had been arranged. The host-
ess had provided a most attractive j
young woman for the Toledo mau .
and it was thought that he would ;
take a desperate fancy to her which !
indeed he did. When the guests J
had gathered and were ready to go
out the host with his politest bow
said iMr. Blank will you please
take Miss Dash out to dinner?"
"Certainly" responded the Toledo
man with alacrity 'Tint I under-
stood that we were to have dinner
here in the house." Argonaut.
Tak'r.g No Chances.
"Here's a nod scheme" she said
looking dp :'rom the paper she. had
been reading.
He seemed a trifle suspicious but
it was so evident" that he was ex-
pected to answer that he made the
inquiry.
"Why it says that some wives
shave their husbands and in that
way save what they would ordinarily
pay for a barber" she explained.
"Mary" he said after a moment's
thought "you may get that gown
you spoke about this morning. - -It
won't be necessary for you to get
at my throat with a razor."
He Wort the Suit.
"The worst case of ignorance I
can tell you of occurred in 18G9 in a
remote section of our country" said
a western congressman. '"'There was
a man who suddenly beoame rich
and built an enormous house with
some statuary and so he wrote to
Italy for a copy of Yenua de Milo.
The" copy in duo time arrived. It
was execnter! ' " rrara marble very
beautif .".. ' no sooner 'did ho
receive it than the" millionaire sued
the railroad for .$2000 for mutila-
tion and what's more he won the
suit' Milwaukee Sentinel. ;
