FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 29 1907
The subject of agriculture is
tdaiming more and more attention
Tfrom colleges and advancing more
and innre in imnortance in the
minds of the people generally
showing that this industry is com
ine to be regarded in a higher
light is in reality being exalted
to the dignity of acalling that claims
some nf the very best material
which is found in American citi
zenship. Science is elevating
agriculture. It is not only teaching
the farmer new methods and help
ing him to do better than ever be
-Fnrp the same thines that he has
Snnir heen doine. and thereby to
achieve more remunerative results
knt it is also showine the farmer
how he may use his land and cap
Ital in raising new products which
lie never before thought of grow
ing and which ottentimes prove
far more profitable than corn cot
ton and other ordinary farm pro-
ducts. So successful have these
efforts on the part of science to
promote the progress of agriculture
fceen that this calling is becoming
more and more attractive and the
slogan "back to the soil" is being
aken up by men of standing and
intelligence everywhere. College
men as well as others are coming.
to regard scientific farming as a
calling in which they may find
both profitable and agreeable em
ployment and the result is being
seen in the rapid growth of that
industry all over the country.

A Noble Boy.
A certain boy matriculated in
one of the universities of the south.
He was poorly clad. When this
boy paid his board tuition and
the price of second-hand books
ae had just $5 kft. At the end
of the fourth year he took the "A.
B." degree and the pext year the
"'A. M." degree. His poor old
widowed mother sold one of the
plow horses to pay him through
the fifth year. But at the end of
that year he sat aniong the gradu-
ates dressed in plain brown linen
coat and pants and no vest. But
ihe was the honor graduate and at
the head of the class. When a
beautiful gold medal was handed
to him he stepped from the plat-
form and went to the back of the
roam where sat a homely old
-woman dressed in black and tied
ihe blue ribbon with the glittering
medal around her neck. She.
buried her wrinkled face in her
old drawn hands and wept like a
child. It seemed the applause
xrould never cease. And now he
is a corporation counsel at $6000 a
year and his mother sits happily
in the gloaming of a beyond and
