Chaffer Box
Students on the South Plains
College campus seem to be
greatly relieved now that those
horrid finals have been taken.
The residents of Frazier Hall
seem to have found a liquid
which helped them to study
much better. I didn’t say what
the liquid was, nor will I men-
tion any names, but there were
a lot of people taking cold
showers during test week.
There have been a large num-
ber of new students to register
for this spring semester. I
notice that the girl - boy ratio
is still in favor of the boys
as far as the largest numbers
are concerned. Don’t despair
girls, maybe some of them
will venture over to the girls
dormitory this semester.
The latest in spring fashions
for college students are now
arriving at Arnold’s. See you
in this fine store.
It seems that one of our old
cowboys, Kent Moore, has de-
cided to come back to SPC
this semester. He plans to make
SPC a four year college even
if the State doesn’t approve!!
Kent hasn’t lost anytime in
getting to know the new girls.
His most recent conquest is
known as "‘Red” or Georgia
Gauntt. Has your hair develop-
ed some sort of managability
problem Georgia?
In addition to all the other
trouble at the girls* dorm it
seems that we are no longer
allowed to kiss boys good -
night on the door step. How
do you girls like being campus-
ed for kissing your beau good-
night?

Brenda Mullinwhacker tells
me that Bob Ellis has been
trying to be pretty smart late-
■y. It seems that Bob’s wisdom
teeth were giving him a little
trouble and he thought that he
would be smart and get him-
self mixed up in that eternal
triangle of Haley, Reed, and
Dobbs. Glad to see that you
had your wisdom teeth remov-

The freshmen class needs tal-

they don’t get more entries

Ittaca someone asking who
the girl was that is playing
basketball for the Texans.
That’s no girl, its just Curley

has to save his money to pay
for his books and fees.
Cathey Stacy and Lewi Pope,
known for their intelligence,
had a little trouble concerning
one of Leon’s old girlfriends.
It seems that Billy Jo came to
see Leon the other day, but
much to Leon’s disappointment,
he was at Cathey’s hume. Oh
well, Leon can still talk over
the good old times with Ver-
non Ethridge. It seems that
they have something in com-
mon.

THE THREE STOOGES A COLUMBIA PICTURES RELEASE
By Robert Haynes
A question for all propective
coaching students?
While coaching a basketball
game, you watch your team
miss 15 uncontested layups the
first half. What medicine does
a coach take to relieve the
sicking feeling in the stomach?
Coach Bill Powell might sup-
ply the answer if asked, for
this was one of the many prob-
lems he had last Tuesday as
the South Plains Texans stumbl-
ed behind Frank Phillips Junior
College 92-89.
It wasn’t ‘the Texans’ night
as four times in the second
half they tied-up or pulled ahead
of Frank Phillips, but could
never accumulate enough lead to
control the game.
With 3:34 remaining, the
score was tied at 77-77 and the
Texans controlled the ball.
They attempted two jumpshots,
a couple of tip ins and even had
the ball out of bounds once, but
when Frank Phillips finally
moved the ball back up court,
the score was still 77-77.

Balanced Attack
Gets SPC Victory
“They played basketball like
we want to play,” was Coach
Powell’s comment after the
Texans had outclassed the Odes-
sa College Broncos in Odessa
last Friday night, 74-58.
It was control ball all the way
for the Texans and combined
with 37 points by Charlie Turn-
bough, it turned out to be a
miserable night for the
Broncos.
The Texans started out warm
on their shooting, after being
frozen out of the game the first
4 minutes, and just seemed to
get hotter as the game pro-
gressed.
The Texans pre - game plans
of a stall to pull Odessa out
of a zone offense ran afoul
when the Broncos jumped into
the lead. The Texans spent the
next 15 minutes catching up.
With four minutes gone in the
first half, the Broncos led 5-0
'and all the Texans had to their
credit was a defensive rebound.
Turabough and Haley may
have had the right touch for
scoring, but if the Broncos
had picked the main source of
their troubles, very likely it
would have been Dennis Patton.
The husky 5-10 guard ran
three different defense men rag-
ged picking holes in Odessa’s
zone defense and setting up the
necessary plays. He and Turn-
bough played all but two min-
utes of the game, going out to
make room for the subs in the
waning minites.
Turnbough paced the Texans
with 37 points, Haley picked
up 15 for his record, to be the
only ones in the double digits
for the Texans.
