PERSONALS.
George Stowe Sundayedat the
Point.
J. P. St. John Jr. and family
visited the Point yesterday.
E. E. Lowe returned last night
from a short visit to Mercedes.
J. W. Hoit of Mission arrived
Saturday evening and remained
over until today.
D. Andrews of the International
Fish Company came up from the
coast last evening.
John Box returned to his ranch
home near Point Isabel yesterday
after a visit in town.
Mrs. A. E. Scanlan visited her
son Geo. Scanlan at Point Isabel
yesterday returning home last
evening.
Emile Kowalski returned Satur-
day night from Rincon Antonio
Mexico where he has been in the
employ of the Tehuantepec rail-
way. He will spend some time at
home with his parents Mr. and
Mrs.. L. Kowalski of this city.
Paul Moore of St. Louis who is
managing editor of the Christian
Evangelist published in that city
accompanied by his father Dr. W.
T. Moore of Columbia Mo. ar-
rived in Brownsville last week to
spend a few days looking at the
country.
O. Em Jones superintendent of
the Hidalgo Canal Company with
headquarters at Hidalgo arrived
last night from Harlingen where
he was present yesterday at a fam-
ily reunion at the home of his par-
ents. Mr- Jones reports both Harf-
lingen and Hidalgo as" being in a
flourishing condition. He will re-
turn home tomorrow.
J L. Parker of Kinsley Kans.
who bought a large tract of laud
near Olmito about two months ago
returned here about a week ago
and has been quite sick the past
week at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Lackner being threatened with
pneumonia. He is much improved
now however and will return
home as soon as able to travel.
W. H. Stenger vice president
and general manager of the San
Benito Land and Water Co. has
returned from a visit of several
weeks to Guatemala Central Ame-
rica where he went to look after
his extensive interests in banana
plantations. He was much benefit-
ted in health by his trip but re-
turns with the conviction that San
Benito is the best place after all.
He was a visitor in Brownsville
Saturday and Sunday returning to
San Benito today.
Prof. E. C Snow who occupies
the chair of mathematics in the
Texas Christian University of
Waco accompanied by Miss Park-
er who is a teacher in Baylor Uni-
versity of Waco and Mr. McClain
also of the same place arrived in
Brownsville last nicht. Prof. Snow
has already bought sereral hundred
acres of laid near here and went
with his party this morning to La
Donna where he expects to buy
more land with the intention of
putting in a sugar plantation. Mrs.
X. H. Hallam of this city accom-

Jert Glover formerly.of Cordell
Okla. who has"- been spending
somk months in Brownsville has
decried to locate oermanently at.

stockholders in the club. He has
made arrangements to begin the
erection of a residence at Laguna
Vista' at once. Mr. Glover has
resided in Oklahoma the past ten
years having gone to that country
while it was in a . comparatively
wild state and is therefore in a
position to know how to help put
a new country on . quick paying
basis. He was in town today and
ordered The Weekly Herald sent
to a friend at Cordell to show him
what great things jire doing on the
Lower Rio Grande.

First Witness Examined for State but
Illness Prevents Cross-Examination
by Defense.
To The Herald.
Laredo Texas Jan. 19- The
jury in the case of Juan MoraIeson
trial for the murder of Gregorio
Duffy was. completed this morn-
ing and the hearing was begun.
The first witness for the state was
Dr. DeShields of . Rio Grande
whose examination occupied the
entire morning session when he
and was turned over to the de-
fense for cross-examination at the
afternoon session. A sudden check
in the trial occurred however as
Dr. DeShields was taken suddenly
very illfshortly after noon being
unable to appear before the court
again and the court was adjaurn-
ee for the afternoon.
It is expected that the case will
occupy the court all of next week.
