Judge Hopkin's statement to
the effect that the violation of the
saloon gaming and pistol Jaws
leads to most crimes is heartily
concurred in by thinking people.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E.
Rutledge was gladdened Sunday
night by the birth of a little on
their first born who is already
known to their many friends as
Master Jack.
Another car-load of lettuce was
shipped from Olmito today and
another car of. mixed vegetables
from Santa Maria. Still another
car of lettuce will go from Olmito
Friday. "Lettuce hope" it may
bring top prices.
The meeting of the Real Estate
Men's association will be held to
night at eight o'clock at the office
of E. R. Rowson aud Co. as an-
nounced. This meeting will tran-
sact business of great interest to
all who have the welfare of Browns-
ville and this section at heart and
there should be a large attendance.
The plumbing electric and sheet
metal business that was opened
lately on Elizabeth street has
changed hands having been

to Brownsville and expects to
make his home here.
The list of poll taxes paid in
Cameron county by precincts is
published i n today's Herald.
This list has been carefully read
and is accurate by copy furnished
by the tax collector. It will make
interesting matter for reference
when the elections come on in the
fall showing the voting strength
of each precinct and should be
preserved by all who are interested
in the subject.
The young ladies are preparing
anothertreat for the young men by
giving a leap year "calico" dance
which will take place on the 14th.
at the opera house. The "calico"
feature will be carried out by the
young ladies wearing dresses of tbat
material. If one is to believeswhat
one hears there are going to be
some stunning costime.s which
will illustrate what can be done

after all a woman can look just as

Through a. desire to cut dov 5
expenses the Southern Pacific
railroad company will beginning
March 1 abolish its land and
immigration department. By do
ing so it will save $25000.
This will have little effect on the
movement of homeseekcrs to the
state of Texas as comparatively
few of the thousands who are
locating throughout the Lone Star
state travelled over the Sunset
lines. The Southern states home
seekers were practically the only
ones who were routed over the
Sunset and they will continue to
come to Texas anyway.

Admiral Evans aud his battleship
fleet are now at Punta Arenas Pa-
tagonia where "they will remain
for some time to come. Admiral
Evans has reported the death of
one man.
Prince Manuel of Portugal has
been crowned king of Portugal to
succeed his father and the Crown
Prince who were assasiuated Sa-
turday. Franco has' been confirm
ed as dictatar. King Manuel is
the second of that name.
A circular letter will be issued
by the Mexican authorities within
a few days to the effect that all
immigrants to that country must
be vaccinated. The circular will
be given to all foreign govern
ments.
An employe of the Mexican
postoffice department was arrested
forlhe alleged theft of $100. His
associated raised the amount be-
lieving him to be innocent and he
was released.
Harry Thaw has spent his first
day in the state asylum at Mat-
tewan N. Y. There having been
made no arrangements for special
meals for him he was compelled
to eat common prison fare.
Abe Ruef former boss of San
Francisco created a sensation in
court when he denounced District
Attorney Langdon. He intimated
that Langdon was a prevaricator.
Maud Gonne the "Irish Joan
of Arc" has been refused a divorce
from her husband Major McBride.
She gets nothing but a legal separation.

this morning until adjournment
was taken this afternoon little of
any importance was transacted.
This morning was taken up with a
review of a" hundred or so civil
cases some of them filed two years
ago. A number of these were
stricken from the docket while a
number were continued. Others
were announced as having been
settled.
This afternoon several divorce
cases were taken up. The first
was that in which Juana Tudor
applied for a divorce from her
husband Francisco. Tudor de-
sertion being alleged. The woman
testified that her husband deserted
her in TUne 1904. Suit hav-
ing been filed in less than three
years from the time desertion was
alleged the case was thrown out of
court. The other cases were of
like minor importance.
The Grand Jury has made no re
turns up to the present time al-
though a great many witnesses
have been called before.it.
Gen. Manuel Bonilla ex-presi
dent of Honduras has announced
that he will not start a revolution
against Davila.
Brownsville Road 1
Can Lay New Switch.
The St. Louis Brownsville &
Mexico railroad was graated per-
mission by council last night to lay
a switch from its lines to the new
pumping station. This switch was
an urgent necessity. It will be
constructed before the station is
built.
Mayor Combe was in the chair
at the regular council meeting last
evening. Only matters of routine
importance were transacted in ad-
dition to the foregoing.
The bond of F. Villareal who
has leased the market for this year
for $5000 was approved.
George Roberts Is Dead.
George Roberts formerly of Cor-
pus Christi and well known both
in that city and in Brownsville
died in San Antonio SntiinW
night. He had lived there for
sometime. Atone periedhehad
a hotel and saloon in Corpus
Christi. He was a very liberal
man when he had money but of
late years had been overtaken by
adversity. When he died he oc
cupied a single room on Soledad
street San Antonio. His body will
be taken to Cornus Christi for
burial.
Mazatlan Mex. is being rapid-
ly improved. It was once a great
city but fell into decay. The
coming of the railroad is resulting
in the moodernizing of the old
'port.
