Soome wctfks ago we published as an advertisement an
estimate on onions grown on 107 acres of land in the win-
ter of 1007 and 1008 land adjoining La Lomita Ranch by
W. P. Stites Ed Pullian W. E. Nlckerson and Ed C. Dos tin
Secretary of the South Texas Onion Growers Association.
This estimate was made in May while the Onions were in
transit. Since then W. P. Stites and W. E. Nlckerson have
received return on their shipments from the 43 acres which
they cultivated. Mr Dostin and Mr. Pullian have not yet re-
ported results of their 64 acres.
The 43 acres reported on by Messrs. Stites and Nlcker-
son show the results in a year when the markets were un-
favorable of careful cultivation good and careful packing
and early marketing of Bermuda Onions. . The 43 acres pro-
duced to 34 car loads containing 17001 crates netting the
growers $15304.04; the commission men $1320.00; the
crate men $2000.37 and the railroads $8201.70. Reduced to
one acre each acre paid $358.01 net to the grower$30.70 to
the commission men$G8.84 to the crate men and $102.83 to

The Rio Bravo Irrigation Co. has
just about completed Its canal at
McAHen reports C. S. Morton who is
secretary and treasurer of the? com-
pany. All of the pumps are in shape
and working. Drainage bridges and
telephones are all completed and all
of the bridges are supplied with sewer
pipe. The work of fencing in the
tract has been completed and eight
farmers are now at work clearing and
planting about seven hundred acres
and Mr. Morton reports that there are
more to follow soon.
There is not another town in the
state that is growing like McAHen
Mr. Morton declares and everybody
is a hustler there. A new hardware
and feed store is now under con-
struction and will be completed in
a few days. When this is completed
it will give McAHen a total of five
stores two hotels and two lumber
yards. There are also six new resi-
dences now being constructed. The
new hotel recently built by Manuel
Samono Is being enlarged and will
be opened by October. It has been
leased by Louis Gerlts of St Louis
who has gone back to that city to
move his effects to McAHen and will
return In a few weeks.
McAHen Is barely six months old
and has a population of something
over three hundred while the sur-
rounding country is being thickly
settled. The farms yir Morton
said are flourishing and are in ex-
cellent condition.

In competition with boys all over
the United States the first prize for
the best vacation letter offered by the
New York Herald has been won by
Master Robert Rutledge a ten year
year old boy of Brownsville and pu-
pil of the Brownsville public school
having been in the Fifth grade last
session. Master Robert is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Rutledge of this
city. He is at present spending part
of his vacation at Saltlllo Mexico
and it was since going there tthat he
wrote the letter which has won for
him such a proud distinction. The
lact that he is a pupil of Brownsville's
public school and has never atended
any other school reflects credit on this
place and its public school.
The prize won by Robert was one
of those offered in the Herald's vaca
tion letter contest which offers a se-
lection from a number of articles
such as a tennis racquet hammock
kodak croquet set etc. each week for
the best three letters from boys and
girls. For the week ending August
16 1 the Herald reports that there
were "so many extremely interesting
vacation letters from boys and girls
that It was difficult to say which were
the best three.' For general excel-
lence as well as for their interest it
was finally decided that the letters of
Robert Rutledge of Brownsville Tex-
as; Lillian Wald No 1770 Madison
Ave. and Margaret C. Hale of Lo-
gansyille N. J. entitled these young
correspondents to the award." The
three prize winning letters were pub-
lished that of the Brownsville con-
testant appearing in the Herald of
Aug. 23. It was as follows:
The Prize Letter.
To the Editor of The Herald:
You cannot guess what a good time
1 am having here In the mountains.
There Is a mountain about one mile
from town and I have a good time
cUmbing It. live in Brownsville
Texas but it is so hot there that we
came here to enjoy the cool breezes
for a couple of months. The town is
about entirely surrounded by moun-
tains. About five miles from town Is
the battle ground where General Tay-
lor fought the famous battle of Buena
Vista. I climbed the mountain where
Caylor took his stand. The land close
around is full of little ravines and
canyons. I do not know if it was
the same at that time but if so I
can't Imagine how they could possi-
bly fight in such a place. Three rail-
roads now pass within a few feet of
each other on the old battle ground.
On the way out just a little way from
town Is the American fort or what Is
left of it It Is of brick and all
tumbled down and situated on a high
hill where they could see well. An-
other thing that Is nice to see Is the
old churches. The Cathedral is very
old some say 110 years and others
say 300 but anyway it is old and
celebrated It's birthday August the
6th. Quite a pleasant thing hap-
pened in our hotel last n'ight. Gen.
Villar was passing through Mexico
and stopped here over night. In the
evening the military band came and
gave a concert in honor of the gener-
al. All of the guests got the benefit
of the music. There is a show In
town and I may go but I have seen
so many good shows in the states
that I don't care to go( only because
the others are going. I have reached
three hundred words and must stop.
Your truly
ROBERT RUTLEDGE.

Irrigation Versus Nature
Why trust to the fortunes of fickle Nature's rainfall for your
harvest returns? Why not farm in a country where every day
is a day of field activity throughout the entire year a land whose
climate soil and natural gravity canal insures the control of
your crop production.
