IT HAPPENED IX BROWNS-
VILLE. CoiuiiK-uuiig upon the killing of a
negro u. Brownsville by a police offi-
cer. wiiK'U ab apparently without the
slightest justification and the in-
dignant condemnation of the deed by
the -iuzeiis of Brownsville the Cor-
pus Christi Herald says:
The Brownsville policeman who it is
alleged wantonly slew a negro Pullman
porter was remanded to jail without
bond Not only that but the citizens
of Brownsville made up money
enough to ship the remains of the ne-
gro to his former home in Atlanta
Ga. This was in Brownsville a town
which has had a peculiarly unpleas-
ant experience with the negro race.
Jt is posit he evidence of one thing
that when he is anywhere near the
right a negro can come nearer securing-
generous treatment in the
iiouth than anywhere else in Ameri-
ca. Everything indicates a desire
of the Southern people to encourage
and defend negroes who conduct
themselves properly.

Js'ow that the Texas legislature has
celebrated the battle of San Jacinto
it will be real interesting to attend a
celebration of the battle at Browns-
ville with ex-Senator Foraker as the
orator of the day. Terre Haute Tri-
bune. The Tribune makes a mistake. It
was not a buttle that occurred at
Brownsville on the occasion referred
to. It was just a plain attempt on
the purl of Senator Foraker's pets of
the Infamous Tuent -iifih Infantry
to massacre a number of the citizens
of Brownsville iuclud'ing children
sleeping In their beds
For the Housewife.

Xot Her Husband.
The tube car gave a lurch says Tit-
Bits. The young man who had just
risen from his seat lost his balance.
The tube car stopped with a jerk. The
young man sat down automatically in
the fashionable lady's lap. She be-
gan to shriek in this wise:
You contemptible pup! I wish you to
understand that I am not a lamppost
or a piece of furniture to be clung to
for support! You have no right to
crowd in and ear other people to
pieces with your big clumsy hands!
You pitiful clown you! You aren't
fit to be ollowed among nice quiet
well-dressed people! You unmanner-
ly bumpkin you deserve to be "
"Excuse me madam" broke in the
young man "you have made a mis-
take." "A mistake?" demanded the lady
her eyes flashing with anger. "What
do you mean?"
"This ma'am." replied the young
man. "I'm not your husband."

View of Philanthropy.
Coquelin was very charitable"
a Pittsburg theatrical manager.
"He did more for superannuated ac-
tors and actresses than any other
man in France. I once heard him
speak on charity in the .French Ac-
tors' Home that he did so-much for.
' 'There are plenty of philanthrop-
ists.' said Coquelin. "Plenty I mean
according to the definition that too
many of us accept.
He smiled grimly.
" 'Too many of us' said Coquelin
define a' philosopher as one who
bears with resignation the cold and
hunger from which his neighbor is
suffering and too many of us defiue
a philanthropist as one who gives
away other people's money." Pitts-
