Quartermaster Sergeant Joe All-
good of the Brownsville Rifles was
this morning arraigned before Unit-
ed States Commissioner A. B. Cole
on a charge of unlawfully taking and
having in his possession a regulation
United States Army rifle and also
with disposing of another rifle of the
same kind. The testimony was given
in effect that on or about August
S Sergeant Allgood took from a
case in the armory containing rifles
that had never been issued to the
company and without the knowledge
or consent of the commanding officer
three rifles one of which it is al-
leged lie gave to Sergeatn R. E.
Clark. One of these rifles was
found in Allgood's home yesterday
by United States Deputy Marshal
V. B. Linton.
Sergeant Allgood in his own de-
fense stated that while at Camp
Mabry he hau found several cart-
ridges belonging to Springfield rifles
and that he had taken the rifle for
the purpose of using up these cart-
ridges after which he had expected
to return it to the armory. He de-
nied all knowledge of the other
rifle which has not as yet been
found. The rifle which was in the
possession of Sergeant Clark was

The hopes of Postmaster Renttro
of getting mail into Brownsville this
afternoon were suddenly dashed to
the ground about three o'clock
when he received a message to the
effect that about a mile of the road
bed between Harlingen and Lyford
has given away with the rain with
the mail as usual on the wrong side
of the washout. It will be neces-
sary to crib the track where the road
bed is gone before an engine can get
across.
Superintendent Finnegan this
morning 'phoned Mr. Rentfro that
there was no doubt but what all of
the mail for Brownsville could be
brought to Harlingen this afternoon
as two engines had already made
the trip and that he had sent one
of these engines back after the mail.
Postmaster Rentfro therefore decid-
ed that he would discontinue the
mail service to El Sauz by boat as
by that route it would be impossible
to get the mail here before tomor-
row night and he felt sure the
railroad io..:pany would manag3 to
get the mail into Harlingen this af-
