its interior covered with blood.
Tell at Money Demands
The Press also quoted a aouree
with underworld connections that
Eggleston and Green had been de-
manding "money or else" in tele-
phone calls to Fort Worth reel-
dents Some of these residents,
the Press said, had no under-
world connections.
Eggleston took oft after the
shooting.
Burch said that Eggleston
escaped around the corner and
through a lumber yard to the
house where police found him cow:
ering some hours later. Burch said
three pistols were found in the
house, and Eggleston gave the.ap:
pearance of being set to defend
himself.
Ambulance drivers, summoned
by an anonymous caller whom po-
lice think may have been Eggles-
ton. found Green lying on the
ground beside his Cadillac. Burch
said he apparently had made an
attempt to flee but had been too
seriously wounded to do so.
Green Refuses to Talk
One of the ambulance drivers
recognized Green and radioed
ahead for police to meet them at
St. Joseph's hospital. The police

tion Green, he refused to reply to
their questions.
He was taken to emergency
where doctors pumped 10 pints of
whole blood into his body to save
his life. Skilled surgeons worked
over him for 3 1-2 hours before he
could be moved to a private room.
More blood was given him and by
7 a m. Tuesday, his body had ab-
sorbed 16 pints. A spokesman said
doctors are sure he suffered only
one bullet wound, that in the right
side of the chest.
But splinters from his Cadillac
made from the fusillade of bullets
cut him up badly on the right arm
and right side of the head. the
spokesman said.

the train was pulled onto the

passengers spread through the
snowy timber toward the Samuel
place.
The house was dark. No warn-
ing was given.
Through the west window, a
flaming metal object was tossed.
By its glare, the posse saw the
room's occupants: Dr. and Mrs.
Samuel and the two small Sam-
uel children. Suddenly, there
was a flashing explosion. The
Pinkerton men rushed forward.
In the house they found Dr.
Samuel unconscious, bleeding
from multiple wounds. By the
blackened fireplace stood Zerelda
Samuel, her right arm a shape-
less pulp. On the floor lay
eight-year-old Archie Samuel,
Jesse’s half-brother and prime
family favorite, a gaping hole
torn in his side.
The boy died the next morn-
ing. even as Dr. Samuel wafam-
putating his wife's mutilated
