ENGINEERING 75
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
The mathematician in industry must be prepared to work with engi-
neers and scientists from every field of specialization. He needs to under-
stand their language in order that his special knowledge may be put to use.
The degree program in mathematics is designed to supply a broad
acquaintance with science and engineering, together with the basis upon
which a mathematical specialty can be built.
In addition to the degree program, the department of mathematics of-
fers courses to provide the necessary mathematical background for spe-
cialization in science and engineering. Since entering students vary widely
in their mathematical attainments, the department will counsel with each
student to determine the sequence of mathematics courses which will best
serve his needs.
Program of Study
First Year-See uniform first year.
Beyond the First Year-
Candidates for the degree in mathematics should present a total of 96

2. 20 semester hours in the Division of Sciences.
3. 24 semester hours in the Division of Humanities,, including 6 in
English and 6 in government.
4. German is recommended but not required.
The particular courses selected to satisfy these requirements are sub-
ject to the approval of the department. Ordinarily the department will in-
